Advocating for Our Work

A few weeks ago Chicago Public Schools' community school partners faced uncertainty about funding that the district provides for community school partnerships. Although we are grateful this matter has been resolved for next year, this issue highlights the importance of making sure policymakers are aware of the great success of the community school model. The Federation's Program Advisory Committee (PAC) and staff are continuing to implement strategies to deepen the commitment to the community school model among public leaders and policymakers in Illinois.

Recently we disseminated tools and materials to Chicago's lead partner organizations that can be used to talk about community schools and chronicle the outcomes and methods being used to implement community schools.  As we move forward we would like to highlight these materials after they have been personalized for community schools across the state. Please be sure to send us a copy of the materials that you develop - or your revised versions of these tools - so that we will have them as we move forward together.  Also, be sure to stay in touch with your Program Advisory Committee members and attend stakeholder meetings to stay abreast of ongoing efforts to ensure this important work continues.

Resource Coordinator Luncheon

July 23, 2012

12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.

We invite community school resource coordinators to join us on Monday, July 23, for a Resource Coordinator Luncheon hosted by Billie Poe, resource coordinator for Yale Elementary School / Youth Guidance.  Billie will be sharing information about their summer programming and how she is using the summer to prepare for the 2012-13 school year.

Resource Coordinator Luncheons offer participants an opportunity to learn from each others' work and engage in shared problem solving.  To ensure that Luncheons offer coordinators a safe environment to explore any struggles they may be facing, we ask that only resource coordinators / site coordinators attend.

Lunch will be providedIf you would like to attend, please RSVP to  Havilah Darnieder by Thursday, July 19, so that we can order sufficient food.

NEW DATE:  Monday, July 30, 2012

9:00 am - 12:00 p.m.

This training will provide an overview of the ways in which community schools forge partnerships to access and maximize community-based resources and leverage assets. Participants will learn about and develop strategies that community schools - regardless of funding source - can use to sustain and expand their current programming through strategic partnerships and collaboration.  Participants will also receive tools for use in identifying and targeting local partnerships that have the potential to bring resources to the table and make their programs sustainable.

This training will be held at Metropolitan Family Services, located at 235 W. 103rd St., Chicago, IL.

To register, please email Greg Hall.

Institute for Family Focused Organizing

Community Organizing and Family Issues (COFI) invites you to join them on August 8-10, 2012 for their Train-the-Trainer / Organizer workshop on Phase 2: Community Outreach & Action.

Throughout COFI's 17-year history, parent participants in the Community Outreach & Action phase of COFI's model has redirected hundreds of thousands of dollars towards communities and won new community centers, playgrounds, and school facilities, among other victories.

At this 3-day, Phase 2 training, COFI will teach you how to build a team of community residents, do one-on-one relationship building interviews, map a community (including an analysis of key assets), choose an issue campaign, and support leaders to win tangible victories in their communities, like those mentioned above. The training includes in-depth exploration of the second year of COFI's two-year organizing process and a community field trip.  It is intended for people familiar with COFI's core organizing work.

Click here for more information on the training, including fee and registration details or contact Kellie at 312-226-5141 or kmagnuson@cofionline.org.
