3 Questions for... Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth
The Federation and Elev8 Chicago are pleased to feature State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth in our second installment of "3 Questions for...", an initiative that seeks to better connect our members to our elected officials. "3 Questions for..." asks three education and community schools-related questions of local, state and federal elected officials. New profiles will be featured in our eDigest and cataloged on our website.
Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth represents the 92nd District, which includes communities like Peoria, Bartonville, Kickapoo and Bellevue. Rep. Gordon-Booth serves on the House Committees on Access to Federal Funding, Elementary and Secondary Education Appropriations, and Human Services Appropriations, among other committees. She entered public service by becoming an AmeriCorp VISTA worker at Illinois Central College, where she worked closely with a variety of faith-based and community- based organizations. Prior to becoming state representative, Rep. Gordon-Booth also served on the Pleasant Hill School District #69 Board. Read Rep. Gordon-Booth's full bio.
Rep. Gordon-Booth responds to our first question...
1. What role can engaging parents or the broader community play in student success?
Engaging parents in their child's education is vital to student success and achievement. While teachers and schools are responsible for teaching children reading, writing, and arithmetic, parents are very influential in other ways. Parents instill in their children the importance of education, discipline, and respect by helping with their homework and taking an interest in what they are learning in the classroom.
When students know that parents care about their education they are more likely to try to find success in school. Students will be more likely to have a good attendance rate, complete homework, study for tests, participate in extracurricular activities and more. Engaged parents help children succeed not only in school, but also in the world after high school and college. These are the students who will educate the next generation, make scientific discoveries, start new, innovative companies and be leaders in the community.

With the new school year comes new opportunities to enhance our work, and the summertime provides a perfect opportunity to deepen our community school implementation and strengthen relationships with our key partners, including principals. Join us this Friday, June 22 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. to learn new ways to share your work with your principals, school leaders and community members, and learn about opportunities that the new structures for leadership and funding at district and state levels offer to support our community school work. This stakeholder meeting will include time to learn from colleagues about effective ways to communicate our work and generate deeper partnerships with principals. Participants will also leave the session with a plan for integrating what they've learned into their practice.

CPS Introduces Single High School Application
Beginning next fall, eighth grade students will be able to apply to multiple Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high schools using just one single application. Previously, students applying to multiple high schools had to fill out separate applications for each school. The new single application simplifies the process for students and parents.
CPS provided fliers (in English and Spanish) regarding the new application process to principals to share with their students before summer break. If you will be working with 7th and 8th graders this summer, you may also want to share this information with them and their parents. More information on the specifics of the single application will be coming throughout the summer, but hopefully this will give students a chance to begin their process of research and selection.
If you are interested in working the high school search process into the summer programming you are offering, please email Amy Sue Mertens, in the Office of Family and Community Engagement, if you have questions.

Leveraging Resources: Expanding Capacity to Support Student Success
July 12, 2012
9:00 am - 12:00 p.m.
This training will provide an overview of the ways in which community schools forge partnerships to access and maximize community-based resources and to leverage community assets. Participants will learn about and develop strategies that community schools - regardless of funding source - can use to sustain and expand their current programming through community partnerships and collaboration. Participants will also receive tools for use in identifying and targeting local partnerships that have the potential to bring resources to the table and make their programs sustainable.
This training will be held at Metropolitan Family Services, located at 235 W. 103rd St., Chicago, IL.
