Oppose the FY13 Human Services Budget

Illinois Partners for Human Services, a state-wide coalition which works to represent and protect the interests of its over 700 human services partners, is asking human services organizations to oppose Illinois' FY13 Department of Human Services budget.   The Federation and Elev8 Chicago are voicing our opposition to the FY13 budget because the proposed cuts in funding and changes to programs will negatively impact many community school partners, and ultimately hurt the very people these programs are supposed to help.   We are particularly concerned about the effect proposed cuts to Teen REACH and changes to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and childcare subsidies will have on students and families.

To voice your opposition to the FY13 budget BEFORE THURSDAY, APRIL 19 at 8:30 A.M., please follow the instructions below:

Resources and supports for integrated learning: Gooru Learning

Gooru is a Web site that provides a wide range of free resources and supports, developed by teachers, all of which are linked to the Common Core standards and state learning standards. Resources include lesson plans, book chapters, articles, quizzes and exams, activities, worksheets, videos, and teaching materials all organized by topic and content area. Teachers and instructors can use one or two tools from a specific content area, combine tools to create a portfolio of resources around a specific topic, access and use portfolios of resources that other teachers have assembled, and use videos and other resources in the classroom, among other things. The site also enables users to create their own lesson plans and connect the theories and skills to supports designed to promote mastery.

Gooru can be a great resource for community schools to use to support integrated learning, enrichment, and individualized instruction during out-of-school time programs, including summer programs.  Best of all, registration and use of the site and its resources are all free. To learn more, please visit the Gooru website.

Grant Opportunity for Chicago Students & Organizations

Sun Life Financial, Inc. has announced that it is accepting applications for the Sun Life Rising Star Award program from nonprofit organizations that advocate for youth from underserved communities.  Now in its third year, the Rising Star program is designed to address low high school graduation rates in large urban school districts by providing financial resources and education to students and nonprofit organizations committed to increasing success for students in high school and beyond, as well as to promote financial literacy as a means to achieve life-long financial wellness and stability.

This year, Sun Life Financial expanded the program to seven cities, including Chicago.  Each winning organization will receive a $50,000 grant, and as part of the application process each organization will nominate an exemplary student for a $5,000 Sun Life Rising Star scholarship toward financing a college education. In addition to monetary support, the program will provide winning organizations with educational curriculum and other resources to increase financial literacy among students.

Applications are due June 13, 2012.  Click here to learn more about this opportunity.
