By no small coincidence, the planet Mars will enter the sign of Libra. This planet of spark and action will step into the Cardinal air sign and work his way towards an opposition to Uranus and a square to Pluto, both in Cardinal signs. Events are likely to be quite profound and memorable during this independent period. Be prepared.
When we stop and look at the planets that populate our cosmic neighborhood, we usually always defer to the Sun as the defining planet. When we ask people what their "sign" is they always refer to their Sun sign. Or, the sign that the Sun was in when you were born. And while this is accurate and useful, it only brings a portion of the story. Anyone who has read my blogs knows that I always talk about the Rising sign as well. This, too, is important, since it represents the costume you wear throughout the course of your life. So, in that respect it is quite a valuable indicator of the personality traits and distinguishing features that come into play.
Of course, astrology, in its purest and most accurate form, takes into account the rest of the planets. And although they all cast an important role in the make-up of each person, there are few planets as powerful and dominant as Mars. Why Mars? You may ask. The answer is found in a simple, common word; motive. Our trustworthy friends at Merriam-Webster describe the word as; "something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act." So why is this associated with Mars and why is it so important?
When we think of what makes us do anything, we have to have a reason for it. There has to be some compelling desire behind each and every act we perform or seek to perform at any given moment in time. Whether that is composing a symphony or simply putting your feet on the ground in the morning; there has to be a reason. That reason, is the energy and influence of Mars. Drive, ambition, achievement, success, anger, charity, and most importantly, love are all extensions of motive. For without motive we are not evolving, living beings. It is a visible, tangible quality that all sentient beings possess. To say that Mars and motive are dominant qualities is an understatement. They are primary. This is his domain.
Just like Aries, the fiery sign ruled by Mars and master of all that is new, everything must begin (and end) and, (drum roll) most importantly, everything happens because of motive (cymbal clash.) In this regard, Mars as a player; as an identifier; is a most important characteristic in the astrology of all individuals. To be is to do.
Author, astrologer, theologian, and presenter of the Sabian Symbols, Marc Edmund Jones, places Mars at the head of his astrological table. It was Jones along with psychic-channel, Elsie Wheeler, who developed the Sabian Symbols; a series of symbolic images associated with each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac wheel. These symbols are amazing in their accuracy when you compare them to your charts.
Jones was a brilliant and visionary astrologer/philosopher and he made great inroads towards bringing astrology into the common dialog and into the future. Once, while he was speaking at an engagement before "The Guild" in New York city in 1942, he presented the 15 steps for properly interpreting an astrology chart. The very first step he declared was to discover where Mars was in the chart. Most astrologers immediately look to the Sun, the Moon and the Rising sign (ascendant), but Jones insisted on Mars. Why? Because it denotes motive. As he stated in his discourse, "It represents the place in life where you throw off energy, fly off the handle and move the hardest to get things done." How apropos!
So we now know that Mars has far more power than we originally thought, but when we look at the chart and we see where it resides, we also now know what makes us move. Quickly looking at the placement of Mars in the houses will give us an immediate theme for desire, motive and goals for any individual. Find the motive and you'll find the individual.
With Mars in the first house, the ego would be the predominate theme and a pushy aggressive person might be present. Since Aries rules the first house and has Mars as its ruler, we can see this quality in the great trail-blazer, Aries. While a second house Mars would show us a person overly consumed with money and acquisition. The third house finds Mars writing, speaking, researching, and communicating with every breathe of his character. In the fourth house, Mars turns inward towards the family. His focus remains that solely of providing and thriving through the family entity. When Mars appears in the sixth house we see a servant who has come to aid and soothe those who require help. With Mars in the seventh house we see a lover of the highest order; one who lives life through pairing with others. Moving on to the other house that Mars rules as the co-ruler of Scorpio, the eighth, finds Mars delving into secrets, the underworld and things of forbidden mystery. Onward to the ninth, where Mars finds travel and education his motive. As we approach the tenth house we see Mars as the successful business-person and employee. These people tend to be very successful. In the eleventh house, Mars turns to groups and business associates where collaboration are the key motivators. Finally as we enter the twelfth house we see Mars tying up loose endings and starting anew. This house of transition, finds Mars seeking closure.
As we see Mars in the current alignment of planets we see the greatest potential for sweeping change. As Mars marches into Libra and opposes Uranus we may see the fires of revolution lit. Mars commences, begins, acts, and asserts. Uranus innovates, rebels, initiates, and expresses eccentricity. What does this combination create?
