A Message from our CEO

Food for Body and Soul

dan
Dan Risch, CEO

Did you know that Lincoln Lutheran, on behalf of the Racine County Department of Human Services, delivered more than 115,000 meals to seniors in our community last year? Did you know we served more than 1,300 people through our Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meal Site programs last year? Did you know that the vast majority of those meals were delivered by volunteers?

Summer is a great time for food - especially barbecuing. There is something special about firing up the grill on a nice summer day, the aroma of food on the grill tantalizing our taste buds and a cold beverage (I'll leave the choice up to your imagination) cooling our thirst. That combination provides nourishment for both body and soul. Family picnics and gathering with friends around the grill enrich our lives in many ways.

Food and friends - that is what our nutrition programs provide to area seniors. We do more than warm people's bellies with delicious food - we nourish their hearts as friendships develop and visits are made day after day after day. I recently sat with some of our volunteer drivers while we celebrated an 80th birthday for one driver. We all affirmed a timeless truth: friends and food nourish both body and soul. To all our drivers and team members at Nutrition - THANK YOU! To all the rest of you - why not volunteer to deliver food for the body and soul with us? You set the amount of time you can commit to and we do all the rest. Call Becky today at (262) 898-2562. It will be good for your body.......... and your soul!

Sincerely,

Dan Risch, CEO

A Bank of Enjoyment

After retiring as a Plant Superintendent, Tom Contois wanted something to fill his new found free time to stay off the couch. A friend suggested helping out at Lincoln Lutheran and he has now been a Skill Bank Helper for five years. He helps others with lawn work, snow shoveling and minor repairs. On average, he helps out ten people a week.

"I get real enjoyment seeing people stay in their own homes and being able to maintain it. It gives me satisfaction knowing that they appreciate it," says Tom.

Tom has even gone above and beyond his normal Skill Bank duties to help clients in other ways, such as driving to places or helping with things they can no longer do.

Skill Bank Helper,
Tom Contois

"There is a lot of enjoyment in helping others. It's the little things," says Tom.

Tom has really enjoyed coming to know the people he has helped. He is glad for the friendships and relationships he has gained.

As the maintenance and heavy work may become strenuous for Tom in the future, he hopes that down the road he can find a less straining volunteer role to continue supporting Lincoln Lutheran and the clients he has grown to know.

Skill Bank uses the valuable knowledge, skills and talents of adults primarily over age 60 to help other 60+ adults remain independent in their own homes. Skill Bank Helpers provide a multitude of services, such as minor home improvement or repair work, transportation, seasonal yard work, house/pet/companion sitting, household chores and much more. If you are interested in becoming a Skill Banker Helper or need services from the Skill Bank, please contact Cindy at (262) 637-7515.

Never too Old to Play

Racine County Executive, Jim Ladwig, proved that you're never too old to play when he came to visit with Adult Day Services' participants on May 21 for Older Americans Month. He proclaimed May as Older Americans Month in Racine County and presented the proclamation to Lincoln Lutheran.

In his proclamation, Ladwig urges all citizens in Racine County to take time in May to engage with our older citizens through enjoyable social interactions.  The official proclamation also stated that older adults in Racine County have an important role in sharing knowledge, wisdom and understanding of the

history of our community through interactions with children, youth and adults from other generations. The interactions of our older adults with family, friends and neighbors across generations enrich the lives of everyone involved.

Thanks Jim for visiting our participants and supporting Older Americans Month!

Celebrating the Journey

RN's Thea and Becky were voted best dressed Hawaiian Luau Dancers during Lincoln Village's National Nursing Home Week Celebration.

Our skilled nursing communities, Becker Shoop and Lincoln Village celebrated our residents and person-centered care in style during National Nursing Home Week which occurred

May 13-19.

Lincoln Village celebrated each day with theme. Team members dressed the part for themes that included Viva Italia, A Day at the Beach, Hawaiian Luau, Chinese Adventure, The Ole' Fishin' Hole and New Orleans. They ended the week with a building-wide picnic with grilled hot dogs and hamburgers.

A special thank you to Nassco, Krantz, Inc. and Superior Health Linens for their donations toward the picnic.

Becker Shoop celebrated with a Hawaiian Day, Tiki Bar and treated guests to an all-out Pancake Brunch to cap off the week. Residents and family members were delighted with pancakes, fresh strawberries, chocolate toppings and a spread of other delicious food. Residents had a blast and ate more than they normally do.

Team members and residents had such a fun time during the week and can't wait to celebrate again next year!

 LeadingAge Conference

Lincoln Lutheran is a proud member of LeadingAge Wisconsin,

Resident, Jeanine Shoening, represents Lincoln Lutheran at LeadingAge Wisconsin Conference. Shown with Dan Risch (CEO) and Dorothy Host (Director of Nursing at Lincoln Village).

formerly known as Wisconsin Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (WAHSA). LeadingAge is a leader in providing resources, education and advocacy to agencies in the field of long-term care, assisted living and retirement living to meet the needs of those older adults in the community.

Nearly 550 aging services professionals, including 16 residents from member organizations, gathered at LeadingAge's Wisconsin 2012 Spring Conference in May at the Kalahari Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. The conference aided professionals in networking opportunities and the chance to
continue learning to enhance the quality of care and services for residents.

We were pleased to have had a resident representing Lincoln Lutheran. A special thank you to Jeanine Schoening for being brave enough to share her life story with conference attendees and her passion for missionary work. In 2005, Jeanine traveled to Ghana for one year as a missionary. In 2011, at age 71, she traveled to Nigeria for 33 days to do more missionary work. Her duties included administering immunizations and leading youth groups. Jeanine believes that it is never too late in life to start something new. At age 48, she received her GED and went on to earn her Nursing Degree to become an RN.

We are honored to be a part of such a resourceful membership and can't wait for the next conference.

Inspiring Change

Lincoln Lutheran of Racine thanks Educators Credit Union and its members for contributing to Senior Assistance Programs during the month of May. Their contribution of $1,800 shows that the dignified delivery of high quality care and services to the seniors we are grateful to serve is important and worthy of support. Thanks for helping make services more readily available to seniors both now and in the future.

Joined at the Heart

From April 30 through May 11, we held our annual Joined at the Heart Campaign. This is the
time in which every member of our staff is given an opportunity to make a financial contribution in support of our mission.

During the two-week campaign, our team members generously contributed $16,542 through their contributions and pledges. These gifts will help us to fund programs, items and activities that may otherwise not be available for our residents and clients.

We are blessed to have such wonderful team members supporting Lincoln Lutheran.
