 SOLAR ECLIPSE THIS WEEKEND
On Sunday, May 20th, the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, producing an annular solar eclipse visible across the Pacific side of Earth from China to the United States.
[ full story] [ video] [ map] John Chumack of Dayton, Ohio, took this picture of Venus on May 14th VENUS TRANSFORMED Something special is happening to Venus in the evening sky. The second planet is diving toward the sun for a much-anticipated transit on June 5-6. As Venus turns its night side toward Earth, the planet is transforming into a beautifully slender and colorful crescent. www.spaceweather.com
May/June Astrology Be prepared for lots of changes (as if we haven't had enough?) through May and into mid-June. Venus went retrograde May 15, we have a new moon and solar eclipse on May 20, and Venus makes a very rare transit across the sun on June 5... and that's just a bit of the excitement!

Just Show Up... What a Breakthrough!
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching yoga is witnessing the breakthroughs students make on the mat. One of the yogis in my 6am class has been working diligently on opening his shoulders. The other morning while in side angle pose - I observed him slide his scapula down and in toward his spine, expand his chest, and rotate his shoulder head open by nearly two inches... This was huge!
After class, I commented that his shoulder experience seemed like a major breakthrough. He replied, "Just showing up was the breakthrough".
Just show up.... To me that IS yoga. Yoga teaches us to observe and remain fully present while experiencing the full spectrum of our lives. Yoga teaches us to show up for each moment in our lives and fully embrace the continual, perpetually changing stream of our thoughts, feelings, experiences and circumstances.
Show up. Show up and drink in each and every moment. Show up and feel each emotion. Show up and observe every thought. Show up and consciously speak each word. You just may experience a breakthrough.
Wishing you the lightest and brightest illuminations in this time of unlimited possibilities.
Thanks for being here!
Oh... and the picture? That's me showing up out on a ledge in the Grand Canyon... trying not to look down!

Ayurveda Tips
Warm temperatures bring us into Pitta Season when we are in close relationship with the elements of fire and water. When Pitta becomes aggravated we may experience anger, irritability and impatience. We may become sensitive to heat and bright light, develop skin rashes, heartburn, acne, and insomnia. To balance Pitta in the hot seasons, follow the ayurvedic advice , "like increases like and opposites balance". To keep Pitta from flaring up this summer, consider these tips: - Eat cooling, sweet, bitter and astringent foods like cucumber, watermelon, coconut, sweet fruits and green vegetables. Try adding fennel, watercress and endive to your salads.
- Try to avoid tomatoes and spinach (I know it's difficult, but both of these favorites aggravate Pitta)
- Reduce intake of dairy and meat
- Avoid spicy food and cut back on salt
- Never skip a meal (Pitta types become like grumpy bears when they're hungry!)
- Exercise during the cool hours of the morning
- If you exercise during the heat of the day, reduce the intensity, be non-competitive and make sure you spend time in a long, slow cool-down
- Drink cool water infused with mint, cucumber and cilantro
- Keep a spray bottle of rose, sandalwood or lavender water nearby at all times for a cool, refreshing spritz

Patanjali Yoga Sutra of the Month
Please enjoy this commentary written by one of my beautiful teachers, Bhavani Maki. Check her out in Kauai at Yoga Hanalei.
I:15 Dṛṣtānusravika vishaya vitṛṣṇasya vashīkāra samjñā vairāgyam
Supreme detachment and self mastery is letting go of the desire for anything seen or heard about, including the promise of heaven or liberation.
The goal of Yoga is to let go, while the internal experience of Yoga is one of release. Supreme mastery, vashīkāra, is described as our ability to let go of any promises we may have heard about, and to open ourselves to the pure joy of experience. Also called Vidyā Yoga, the practices of Patajali Yoga are both the means and the ends through which we penetrate and peel back the layers of our involuntary patterns and defense mechanisms to rediscover and inhabit our original blueprint of open, loving innocence. Vidyā literally translated means to really see, to really pierce through, and is derived from the same root as the word Veda, meaning penetrating teachings and knowledge. The teachings of Yoga forever reveal our patterns, simultaneously offering us the means to extricate ourselves from conditioned existence. Once we open our eyes to these conditioned patterns, we develop the new perspective of nirodha, in which we can hold at least two perspectives simultaneously. With a broadened awareness of both objectivity and the internal responsiveness afforded by subjectivity, we can effectively reevaluate our patterns, refine them or completely let them go, and be pierced to the very core of our being, truly rendering our hearts open.

Flowing River Meditation
If you have a difficult time meditating... try this one - it's easy!
Close your eyes and visualize a river flowing into the sea. See yourself holding on to the bank of the river and see the river continuing to flow past where you are holding on. Now, let go of the bank of the river and flow down with the river and merge into the sea of life. Feel yourself, right at this instant, living in the here and now. Holding onto the river bank, we hold on to Holding on fear, worry, doubt, anxiety and nervousness. Detach yourself from the banks of the river and be free to float in the current of life. Learn to observe. You will realize that you are not your mind, your body or your emotions. You will realize that you are the complete master of your mind, your body and your emotions. Here is another practice: Visualize yourself sitting by a rolling river. Listen to the beautiful sounds of the river as its water runs over the rocks. Listen closely to the water connecting to the rocks. Relax into the sounds the river is chanting and try to be in tune with the perfect universe. The cosmos is perfect. Its laws are divine, its timing flawless, its design unique. While you are sitting alone by the side of the river being one with the perfect universe--the earth, the air, the fire, the water and space, and the mind. When a thought arises from your subconscious, something about your daily life, a problem or difficulty, pluck a leaf from a tree or bush, mentally put the problem into the leaf and place it into the river. The river will carry the leaf away along with the thought you placed into it. Then pluck a flower and humbly offer it into the river with both hands in loving appreciation for doing this great service for you. |
