      Happy Autumn!!
I hope you're enjoying the first few days of fall.  Even though here in the Phoenix area, we're likely to experience temperatures nearing 108 this week, we all feel the changes and excitement of moving into a new season.  I was so fortunate to spend the fall equinox last Friday with my daughter, niece, and some very dear friends on Whidbey Island near Seattle - surrounded by clear, clean water and immersed in lush, dense greenery and spectacular, vivid florals and berries.  A true paradise! We shot the photo at the top of this newsletter on the equinox looking westward toward the Olympic Peninsula and Victoria, BC.  It was a perfect balance point to breathe in the essence of the moment and prepare for the journey into the shorter days and longer nights ahead.

Today is the New Moon and beginning of Navaratri, and Wednesday brings in Rosh Hashanah.  All over our planet, people are celebrating life's abundance in this season of harvest and new beginnings.  As we move, evolve and perpetually renew ourselves and our collective human spirits, let us all recognize our infinite resources and boundless, never ending love.

Fall is Vata Season

space air

          Ether (Space)                         Air

The cool air of fall is brings us into vata season, when we closely experience the elements of air and space.  Vata is dry, light, cold, rough and moving.   Just as a tree loses moisture during this season, and its leaves become dry and brittle, our bodies experience a similar transformation as we transition from summer to fall.

fall tree

Vata is air, space, motion, dry, cold.  Vata governs movement, breathing, motor functions, senses, fear, anxiety.  The shift from Summer into Fall is prime time for Vata conditions to emerge or to become more prominent.  If Vata becomes aggravated, you may experience some of the following:

·  Anxiety, worry
·  Tired, yet can't relax, Fatigue, poor stamina
·  Nervous, can't concentrate, confused
·  Anxious, fearful, agitated
·  Impatient, Antsy or hyperactive
·  Spaced out
·  Shy, insecure, Restless
·  Cannot make decisions
·  Weight loss, under weight
·  Insomnia; wake up at night and can't go back to sleep
·  Aches, sharp pains, Arthritis, stiff and painful joints
·  Very sensitive to cold and wind
·  Nail biting
·  Rough, flaky skin, Chapped lips
·  Dizziness
·  Heart palpitations
·  Constipation, Intestinal bloating, gas, Belching, hiccups
·  Dry, sore throat, Dry eyes

To maintain harmony and balance during this season:

·  Sloooow down

· Eat warm, well cooked foods (avoid salads, opt for cooked vegetables and soups)
·  Eat small, frequent meals
·  Regular meal schedule, don't skip meals
·  One pot meals (stews, soups)
·  Use oils, dairy, ghee (butter)
·  Use sauces, dressings
·  Warm oatmeal and cooked, moist grains
·  Potatoes can aggravate vata, so limit intake
·  Eat sweet, juicy fruits, cooked compote is good
·  No cranberries, pomegranates
·  Limit legumes
·  Some eggs, poultry, fish
·  Nuts, nut butters
·  Limit sugar, caffeine, alcohol

In general -  eat sweet, sour, salty tastes and avoid bitter, pungent and astringent tastes.
A common, easily digestible food to eat during this seasonal transition is kitchari.  Here is a link to a basic kitchari recipe:

In addition to attending to your diet, be sure to:

Keep warm
Keep calm
Opt for gentle, SLOWLY moving exercises
Keep a regular routine
Get plenty of rest

You may want to add some herbs into your routine such as  the common western herb for vata - Ginko Biloba.  Ayurvedic preparations (find at health food store) which include Ashwaghanda are effective, also Triphala
.

Commercial vata preparations are available at the health food store... but in general, I feel it's best to rely more upon food and lifestyle approaches until you obtain individual counsel from a respected ayurvedic practitioner.  If you do decide to add ayurvedic prepations to your routine, you may want to check out my favorite online sites:

Creamy Dreamy Salad Smoothie    vegetable market

It's essential to prepare foods in ways that our bodies can easily absorb and assimilate.... especially during vata season. Some of us with high sensitivity to rapidly accelerating energetic changes experience challenges to our digestive system during peak times, and this recipe has become a staple in my diet.   ...And, I don't know how I ever survived without my vitamix blender.  If your kitchen is without a vitamix, just use your own blender at the highest speed setting.

This recipe takes all of 5 minutes to make, start to finish, and it is SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS and nutritious and so easy to absorb.... so try it - you'll LOVE it!!

Creamy, Dreamy Salad Smoothie

  1 large tomato - maybe 2

(we've had beautiful organic heirloom tomatoes available lately, use the most fresh and flavorful you can find)

  3 celery stalks

  3 romaine leaves

  2 handfuls baby spinach leaves

  ½ avocado

(for extra creamy, use the whole avo!!, yummy)

  sea salt

(use the amount that's best for you)

  ½ tsp. tumeric

  dash cayenne

  ice

  water

Put the veggies and spices into the blender, add just a few ice cubes (because the vitamix will generate heat and you don't want to cook the veggies, just blend them)  and enough water to make a smooth but not watery drink... perhaps 3/4 cup or so.   Blend until smooth and creamy and enjoy!!

Variations - Basil, parsley or any unused salad ingredients.   Also, add olive oil, omit the ice for a nice sauce for potatoes or cooked veggies and grains.

What is Vastu?

vastu

Vastu (or vaastu shastra)  is an ancient science which helps us align with the 5 elements of nature - Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space.  It is a vedic science, thousands of years old, that is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance in India - and is becoming more and more common in the west.  It is similar to Feng Shui in that it teaches us how to live in harmony with the elements of nature and maximize the health and vitality of our chi or prana - our life force.

Why should we know about it?  Just as we are aware of the benefits of a healthy diet, exercise, meditation, etc. for our overall well being; it is important to understand the nature of the elements and how best to optimize our homes and work environments to ensure the highest quality of life.  This includes all aspects of our lives... health, wealth, love and happiness!

Vastu is a huge subject... it's interesting and really fun to learn about.  So each month I'll include a little vastu tidbit.  If you want to dive in and go for it, contact me and I'll give you more resources.

For this month:  Use a compass (or the compass app on your smartphone) to determine what direction your house is sitting on the earth.  What part of your house is in the north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest?  Use the vastu chart above to look up the element associated with each area of your home.

shavasana

Shavasana  (corpse pose)

How many times have you heard a yoga teacher say at the end of a class, "now lets come to the most important pose in yoga... shavasana"?  Well, it's really true!  But, the frustrating part of most yoga classes is that shavasana doesn't last long enough!

We're going through massive shifts and transformations.  The most important thing you can do for yourself now is to give yourself the time to rest, be still, and  relax completely - deeply - profoundly.
