Citizens Redistricting Commission
Moves Release of Second Draft District Maps to July 12th to Incorporate Greater Public Input

Culver City, CA (June 16, 2011) --

In its business meeting today the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, in order to accommodate and incorporate greater public input, voted to move its release of second draft district maps to July 12th. The Commission is charged by voters to draw California Congressional, Legislative and Board of Equalization districts.

The Commission also took the following actions at today's meeting:

  • Voted that their technical experts, Q2 Data and Research, have the latitude to go up to 1% population deviation in state legislative districts to improve ability not to retrogress to comply with the Voting Rights Act (Section 5).*
  • Voted not to hold any public input hearings following the release of second draft maps on July 12th, but will encourage submission of public testimony by e-mail, mail and fax.
  • The Commission is currently seeking public input on its first round of draft maps released last week.  For more information on submitting public comment please go to www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov.

*Corrections - "Q2 Data and Research" and "...1% population deviation in state legislative districts to improve ability not to retrogress to comply with the Voting Rights Act (Section 5)."

California's first Citizens Redistricting Commission is a new 14-member Commission charged with redrawing California's Senate, Assembly, State Board of Equalization, and Congressional districts based on information gathered during the 2010 census. The Commission must draw the State Senate, Assembly, State Board of Equalization, and Congressional districts in conformity with strict, nonpartisan rules designed to create districts of relatively equal population that will provide fair representation for all Californians.
