The Citizens Redistricting Commission held its first two public input hearings this weekend in Redding and Marysville. The Commission took testimony from members of the community, some of whom drove hours to get there, on how they would like to see their Congressional and Legislative districts drawn.
The Commission is holding 34 public input hearings throughout the state and on April 13-16 will be in San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, Hanford, and Merced.
Along with census data, publicly submitted comments will be used to assist the Commission when it begins drawing district boundaries. The focus of public testimony is to receive information about
the unique characteristics of Communities of Interest from those most familiar with their
neighborhoods to help the Commission determine areas that should remain intact and/or be grouped together in districts.
Public input hearings are streamed live and videos of the meetings are available on the Commission's website at www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov. The Commission's staff endeavor to provide all videos within 72 hours of the ending of each meeting. Transcripts of these hearings will not be available due to the high cost associated with transcription services. Transcription is only provided for the Commission's regularly scheduled business meetings and is always provided in a searchable, "PDF" format to ensure that the public is provided an original, unalterable copy of the transcripts.
