Corrugating Industry Controlling Warp
Moisture, Temperature, or Both for Control?
Key Words: Warp, flatness, moisture control, temperature, curl
Warp control in the corrugating industry is a constant challenge, especially when temperature and humidity vary in the manufacturing environment.
Cross Direction (CD) warp is when the top and bottom liner board moistures are not matched and it is the largest contributor to board quality. If the top and bottom liner board moisture levels are unequal after bonding, the variance in shrink rate will cause warp. Machine Direction (MD) warp can be caused by moisture variations between the top and bottom liners and tension control.
Warp Control and Flatness can most reliably be achieved with the incorporation of moisture and temperature transmitters into the control scheme.

Steam Re-Moisturizer
Converting companies vying for the high quality performance paper market focus on flat level sheets with no curl. Moisture control in the Cross Direction (CD) and Machine Direction (MD) greatly improves product quality and minimizes or eliminates edge curl. Steam Curtains re-moisturize the paper to improve cross direction flatness. The Guardian Web Profiler outputs zone averages to control the valve actuators in each zone of the steam curtain.

Liquid Application Moisturizers
Liquid Application Systems control web curl by driving moisture into the sheet fibers. The speed of the applicator roll controls the amount of moisture transferred to the sheet. The MCT360 supplies a local digital display, and analog outputs used to control the applicator roll speed to meet close tolereances. The MCT360 also supplies a digital output for data archiving. |
Guardian Web Profile
Scanning Frame System
The Guardian provides Cross Direction (CD) Web Profiles for moisture, coat weight, and temperature, and Machine Direction (MD) Trends.
The CD Profile can be set up into zones for steam re-moisturizing actuator control applications, and liquid application systems for roller or web speed control.
Hot melts, water based adhesives, acrylics, PSA, PVA, copolymer, latex, varnish, polyurethane, and other coatings are excellent applications for the Guardian Web Profile System.
The Guardian System supplies the web profile on a large LCD screen. Standard screen size for one to two profiles is 19". A complete line, may have up to 8 profiles displayed on a central console 55" screen, and individually at 19" local operator station displays.
The system has analog outputs for control, and a digital output for archiving product run data histories.
