During World War Two, the average GI was in direct combat with the enemy for about 6 months. During the Korean War, the average time in combat was 11 months, and in Vietnam, 13 months.
Since 9/11, however, our armed forces personnel have on average been involved in combat operations for 42 months. The unrelenting pressures of deadly combat on a daily basis for up to 15 months at a time, repeated across multiple deployments, is taking a harsh toll on our military personnel and their families. The current pace of operations is equally hard on the chaplains and the medical personnel seeking to meet the spiritual and physical needs of military families. |
