May is National Military Appreciation Month, and May 6th is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. In 1984, President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother's Day as a time to recognize the vital role military spouses play in the nation's defense. As we observe Mother's Day, therefore, we should honor not only our own mothers, but also the many military spouses who are mothers, as well as the 150,000 mothers across the country who have a son or daughter deployed in harm's way, and cannot be with them on this special day.
We should be especially mindful of the 10,000 or so military women who are mothers and are currently deployed. They deserve our special thanks and appreciation, as well as our support as they defend our freedoms, even as they struggle with the additional stresses of worrying about childcare and separation from their children on Mother's Day. |
