Issue: #2
Spring 2011

Welcome to the second issue of The American Flag Rugby Association newsletter.
AFR at USA 7's
At AFR we are dedicated to helping kids fall in love with rugby ONE community at a time.  With that idea in mind we aim to have CO-ED flag rugby become a permanent fixture in your towns sports calendar. Spread the word and help make us the "little league" of flag rugby!

Las Vegas 7's in February was a big success for AFR as we got to meet with many new prospective program leaders.  We hope to see some western US growth using our platform.  Many thanks to Tom and KJ Feury, Omar Rivera, Siobhan Doherty and Velma Hodge for helping out rugbkid at the booth.

AFR to exhibit at Collegiate Championships in Philly
CRC 7's

The 2011 College 7's Championships migrate east from Ohio to Philadelphia this summer.  16 teams from around the country will compete over two days in 38 matches on June 4th and 5th.  AFR is working with officials at USA Sevens to provide blocks of discounted tickets so that players and parents from The Morris, Union and other NY, CT and PA AFR teams can attend.  There are also discount hotel deals.  We hope to get some players out on the pitch for an AFR flag rugby demo!

Support AFR and buy your tickets to the event from this link.

Former AFR Denville Dawgs player Tina Miller invited to Eagles camp

KJ Feury of the Denville Dawgs interviews Morris Rugby's Tina Miller

Tina started playing flag rugby at Denville and is now on the Morris Lady Lions U19 side. The Dawgs are one of 11 communities playing Flag rugby in Morris County, New Jersey. Miller has recently been invited to the USA Rugby U20 national camp. We also love the fact that Tina is a ballerina dancing in her fourth year on Pointe.

When did you start playing rugby?

I started in the Denville Dawgs flag program in 2004, I was 12. It was the summer after 6th grade.

What position do you play?

Currently play scrumhalf, wing, and any back position.

What team are you currently playing for? Include USA tryout.

Within the past year: Morris Lady Lions U19, Morris Lions Women's, Morris Lady Lions Women's 7s, NYMET Select Sides, trying out for U20 National Team.

What other sports or activities did your participate in?

I have been dancing for 16 years. I am currently dancing ballet on Pointe (4th yr). I previously danced tap, lyrical, modern, jazz and was a student teacher. At Morris Catholic: 4 yr Varsity cheerleader, Winter & Spring Track, Lacrosse. At my parish, St Mary's Denville I sang in the youth choir (6yrs), coached cheerleading at St Mary's (4 yrs) Substitute teaching for CCD, assist with cooking for the homeless, I am a lifetime Girl Scouts. Rugby referee (3 yrs), assist coaching for flag. I also attended the East Stroudsburg Rugby Camp.

What gives you the thrill in rugby?
I love everything about it, but probably the best is the thrill of the chase; chasing others down and not having to hold back, and being chased and getting away.

What are you doing now including schooling & community service work?
Coaching for the Denville Dawgs and referee, attend CCM pursuing a degree in Design-Fashion Merchandising, Dancing ballet/Pointe, working 2 jobs-after school child care & sales associate at Delia's, help out with the parish programs when available, designed the t-shirts for the Jersey Cup Invitational, Lady Lions U19, and the Ruby Youth Festival. I was also recently nominated to the Mayor's Municipal Action Committee in Denville.

Has referring given you a different perspective of the game?
Yes, I have developed a better understanding of and more respect for the rules. It has also given me insight into how far I can push the envelope and what I can get away with.

What are your rugby goals for the future?
Make the U20 team and continue to play and promote the sport (maybe Rio 2016?).

What would you say to a 12 year old girl to encourage her to play rugby?

Rugby is a game that is different from the norm. People do not expect it of you, so if you like to do the unexpected, get a little rough and be part of a team go out for Rugby. Rugby is truly a sport that it is not whether you win or lose but how you play, you play for the fun of the game and the fun of the socializing after. There are also a lot of cute boys too.

An American Flag Rugby Graduate makes the calls on the Pitch!

Tyler Chicarella

Tyler Chicarella is making big calls as Met New York Referee! Tyler is a graduate of the Denville Dawgs AFR Youth Rugby Program in Denville New Jersey. He is the youngest Referee on the Met NY Referee Roster. He started referring the AFR games after he aged out of the program. His knowledge of AFR and playing U 13 & U 15 gave him an inside look and an edge.

Lil Rimac a seasoned Met Union Referee and the Referee Coordinator for the Morris Youth Rugby , mentored Tyler through the process. He completed the USA Rugby 1 Certification Class and began touch judging for men's and women's games. Now he referee's for many U 13 & U 15 games while being active player for the Morris Lions U 19 team.

"Tyler is confident with his calls and maintains control on the field. His quick speed enables him to move about the field with ease. Tyler is a natural.  He knows the game from a players view and now knows it even better as a referee.  He allows the game to flow while maintaining a fair and enjoyable match.  I am very proud of him for all of his accomplishments", says Lil Rimac.

Tyler's interest in referring rugby started as he completed his U 13 tackle season. "I was confident that I would become a better player and have a better understanding of the game if when I  began referring", states Chicarella.

"Traveling around tri state area and meeting new people has also been fun. I have found that I enjoy being able to help players enjoy the game, not to the mention the fact that I get to keep older players in their place", says Chicarella.

Tyler has made the transition from AFR to tackle to referring with ease. "Playing AFR defiantly helped me become a good ref. It helped me understand the basics of the game. In the future I see myself advancing higher levels of referring. I have already started to ref College A and B side matches as well as Men's, Women's, U19 Girls, and u13/u15 matches", states Chicarella.

A Collaborative Project Leads to Grant Funding for Morris Youth Rugby!

Safe Kid Northern New Jersey and Morris Youth Rugby recently received a grant to hold sport safety clinics this spring.

A sports injury module will now be included in the coaching clinics scheduled to be held in June. Here, our volunteer coaches will be trained by the Atlantic Sports Health Team on facilitating a proper warm up and cool down. Injury Prevention materials on proper hydration, concussion recognition and management, overuse injuries and pre-participation physicals.

Youth sports safety has become a strategic focus of Safe Kids. The goal for this national program is to provide parents, coaches and other stakeholders within the youth sports community with practical information and tools that are essential to keeping youth active, healthy and injury free, while playing the sports they love.

Safe Kids Northern New Jersey is lead by the Trauma Service of Morristown Memorial Hospital and its parent company Atlantic Health of Morristown New Jersey. Safe Kids Northern New Jersey is a valued safety expert in the community, and is excited for the opportunity to work with the American Flag Rugby Teams within Morris Youth Rugby.  Note: download informative Safety Tip Sheet via link in sidebar above.

Together we can grow American Flag Rugby and help children be more active, healthy and injury free!
