Religious discrimination: Is an employer obliged to allow employees time off for religious observance?
This issue was considered in the context of an individual who was employed as a security guard.
The employer had a contract with client to provide safety and security services on the site where the employee was based. The client required a specified number of security guards to be onsite for the full duration of operating hours. Accordingly, all security officers at the site were required to remain onsite throughout their shift. The employee, a Muslim, was refused permission to leave the site on Fridays in the middle of the day to attend a local mosque.
