Beating those January blues


 

According to psychologists, the third working Monday of the year (due to fall on 24th January) is annually the most depressing day, due to worries over Christmas bills, gloomy weather and the hype of holidays being over, and research from the Employment Law Advisory Services confirms that absenteeism is at its highest in January and February, so employers should be thinking about how to minimise this by boosting morale.

Employment Law Update
 

 

From February 2011, compensation limits will increase. The maximum amount of compensation award for unfair dismissal will increase from £65,300 to £68,400.

Maximum statutory redundancy payment will be £12,000 and the maximum amount of 'a week's pay' for calculating statutory redundancy pay, (or the basic award for unfair dismissal) is to be increased from £380 to £400.

that some 350,000 British employees were estimated to have called in sick on 1st February 2010, leading experts to dub it 'National Sickie Day'.

 

Among the excuses offered to employers was our favourite: "I swallowed a hot sausage last night and it burnt my throat so badly I can't breathe properly."
