Stetson University Joins
The New American Colleges & Universities
The Board of Directors of The New American Colleges & Universities has selected Stetson University, DeLa nd, Florida, as its newest member. Stetson, the first private university in Florida as well as the first with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, consistently ranks among the top three regional universities in the south in US News and World Report, "America's Best Colleges" publication.
With its combination of excellence in liberal arts and sciences, its AACSB accredited College of Business Administration, outstanding colleges of music and law, and an overarching commitment to civic and ethical development, Stetson is an excellent example of Ernest Boyer's " new American college." Board chair and Hamline University President Linda Hanson spoke for the Board, saying "We are delighted to welcome President Wendy Libby and her talented faculty, administration, and students to our consortium." Stetson joins the NAC&U on July 1, 2011. To learn more about Stetson University, click here. |

"The New American Colleges and Universities: From Founding Conversations to 21st Century Best Practices"
NAC&U Summer Institute June 22-24, 2011 North Central College Naperville, IL Ernest Boyer spoke of the paradigm of the New American College as "integrative institutions" -- ones that intentionally draw connections across the disciplines, between general education and the major, between faculty and students, between the classroom and campus life, between traditional education and life-long learning, between the campus and the larger world. It is Boyer's vision that informs the agenda for our Summer Institutes and makes these gatherings different from other professional meetings you will attend. Perhaps the most distinctive characteristic of NAC&U's Summer Institutes are the participants. Teams are intra-institutional: cross-role, cross-disciplinary, cross-area of responsibility. You will find that time with your colleagues to address mission-related issues can be an invaluable experience. In addition, there will be several opportunities to meet with colleagues who hold similar roles from other institutions. Each year, in addition to encouraging teams that bring an array of faculty and administrators, there are several specific affinity groups that will meet. This year those groups are:
- Department and Program Chairs and Directors
- Enrollment Management Officers
- Faculty engaged in innovative uses of on-line learning
- Student Affairs, including those who bridge student and academic affairs, such as Student Success offices, and Career Development centers
- Marketing/Media/Communications

Summer Institute Keynote Address: Sandy and Lena Astin
Winners of the 2011 Ernest L. Boyer Award Sandy and Lena As tin, seen at the left accepting the 2011 Ernest L. Boyer Award, will speak at the Summer Institute about their latest collaboration, Cultivating the Spirit. The book is based on a study of undergraduates, which shows that religious engagement among students declines somewhat during college, but their spirituality shows substantial growth. Cultivating the Spirit also incorporates findings from a national faculty survey.
