Greetings!

January was an exciting and busy month for NAC&U. We began the year with our Board of Directors meeting at the incredibly beautiful University of Redlands, where Richard Guarasci of Wagner College and Mark Heckler of Valparaiso University were elected chair and vice chair, respectively. Later in the month the first Ernest Boyer Award was presented at AAC&U's annual meeting. On the heels of the conference, the Council of Institutional Representatives elected Hal Baillie of The University of Scranton and Jamie Comstock of Butler University as its chair and vice chair, respectively. All officers will assume their roles on July 1.

Our next meeting will bring chief academic and financial officers together at Hamline University from March 29 to 31. I look forward to seeing many of you there and in June at the Summer Institute, hosted by North Central College.

 Sincerely,

Lynette Robinson

NAC&U Presents First Ernest L. Boyer Award

NAC&U presented its first Ernest L. Boyer Award to Alexander "Sandy" and Helen "Lena" Astin at the annual AAC&U meeting in January. At a luncheon following the award ceremony, the Astins discussed their latest collaboration, "Cultivating the Spirit: How Colleges Can Enhance Students' Inner Lives," a book based on a national study of students' spiritual development, which was published this fall.

Special thanks to presidents Loren Anderson, Pacific Lutheran University; Jerry Greiner, Arcadia University; and Devorah Lieberman, Wagner College for their eloquence in presenting the award.

The Astins will be the plenary speakers at this year's Summer Institute (see below.)

"The New American Colleges and Universities: From Founding Conversations to 21st Century Best Practices"

Join us at the 15th annual Summer Institute

June 22-24, 2011, North Central College, Naperville, IL

We will return to the roots of NAC&U's founding conversations that defined its identity and project forward to pivotal next steps. How are we positioned to provide intellectual and institutional leadership in addressing the challenges of the changing higher education and information-rich environment of the 21st century?  We will collectively build a deep description of the ways in which NAC&U institutions provide a site for innovation, integration, and application in the present and aspire to bring those commitments into the future.

Highlights for the upcoming conference include guest speakers Alexander and Helen Astin, recipients of the first Ernest L. Boyer Award; and announcement of NAC&U's ambitious 2011 Strategic Plan. Registration information will be sent in the coming weeks.

Executive Director Lynette RobinsonNAC&U Executive Director to Retire

Lynette Robinson, executive director of NAC&U since 2006, has announced that she will retire on September 1, 2011. "I have enjoyed my five years with the NAC&U immensely," said Robinson. "Together we have accomplished a great deal during this period, including modifying our name to better reflect our membership; changing the governance structure to better delineate roles and responsibilities; initiating a student exchange between our members; bringing Samford University into the consortium; strengthening the affinity groups of presidents, their spouses, CAOs, and CFOs, and others; creating an award in honor of Ernest L. Boyer, and exploring new ways of collaboration, particularly our current exploration of on-line learning collaborations.

Results Available from Online Collaboration Interviews

NAC&U has just completed Phase I of an initiative to explore interest in offering online courses, certificates and degree programs through a New American College Online entity. Consultants Robin and Neil Heyden cataloged members' current online offerings and assessed interest in and perceived viability of a collaborative venture. Those who participated were asked for their interest in four different scenarios:

  • Shared Support: Support staff and resources, including professional development, IT support, and instructional design online course development, shared across institutions
  • Shared Course Components: Course components shared amongst all institutions-e.g. virtual science equipment, language modules, online labs, simulations, or video
  • Shared Courses: Member institutions share their own online courses with students from participating consortium institutions, sharing revenue and support
  • New American University Online: Joint investment in the creation of a new fully-accredited, online university with students matriculating and graduating from the entity; faculty have joint appointments with their home institution and the new entity

For the full report which summarizes interview results, synthesizes observations and patterns, and offers a spectrum of collaborative options and recommendations, contact Lynette Robinson.Terry Weiner, provost, The Sage Colleges, is chairing the online collaboration committee which includes David Stern, vice president for academic and student affairs, Hamline University; Robert Gearhart, acting dean of the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies, Ithaca College; Jeff Wolf, CFO, University of Evansville; and Michael Coveney, CFO, Arcadia University.
