Greetings!

Welcome to the new e-version of our consortium newsletter, NewsNotes, which replaces our once-a-semester newsletters. (This does not replace our weekly member news recaps.)

With this shorter format, we will regularly keep you up-to-date with important consortium news and events. Please let us know what you think.

Sincerely,
Lynette Robinson
Executive Director

Hampton University Sets a High Standard
Hampton proton institute

Dr. Pamela Hammond, provost, Hampton University, hosted Jamie Comstock, provost, Butler University, and Lynette Robinson, NAC&U executive director, on the beautiful Hampton campus. They toured the Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI), which opened in August 2010 and is the largest of its kind in the world, and the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and its state-of-the art radio station WHOV, 88.1, which streams worldwide.

Dr. Hammond and Dr. Comstock stand in front of the HUPTI. At the heart of it is a 240-ton cyclotron that accelerates a stream of protons to about 70 percent of the speed of light. This generates 230 million electron volts, making these positively charged subatomic particles ready to be beamed into a human tumor with millimeter accuracy.

Richard Guarasci Elected Vice Chair of NAC&U Board

The NAC&U Board of Directors has elected Richard Guarasci, president of Wagner College, as its vice chair. Dr. Guarasci and Mark Heckler, president, Valparaiso University, are leading the NAC&U Strategic Visioning Process.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve as the new vice chair of the NAC&U Board," said Dr. Guarasci. "This organization occupies a distinctive role as innovator in higher education, and I look forward to refining our strategic vision in the months ahead."

Dr. Guarasci most recently served as chair of the Membership Committee and host to the 2010 Summer Institute.

Spotlight on Integrative Studies

Two Arcadia University professors - one in Art & Design and the other in Biology - will again team up to teach "Envisioning Sustainability," a University Seminar that explores the relationship between contemporary art and environmental science using sustainability (global interdependence) as a conceptual nucleus. Summer Institute Update

More than 100 faculty and staff from 17 institutions attended the 2010 Summer Institute at Wagner College, which included an Executive Summit, two-day Presidents' Spouses' Meeting, and a Leadership Development workshop. The response to the Institute was overwhelmingly positive, with over 84% of those attending responding very positively to the program. NAC&U thanks Richard and Karin Guarasci, Devorah Leiberman, and their extraordinary team for planning a most valuable and enjoyable event.

Enrollment Managers Form Affinity Group

Five Enrollment Management officers -- Laurie Hamen (North Central), Karl Stumo (PLU), Tom Weede (Butler), Angelo Araimo (Wagner), and Dana Davies (Arcadia) created an enrollment management affinity group after meeting at the Summer Institute. Joel Bauman, vice president for Enrollment Services at Westminster, will lead this group.

"I welcome the opportunity to help organize an affinity group of enrollment leaders for the New American Colleges and Universities. These are professionals who can raise NAC&U's national recognition amongst their peers and more directly with students and their families. Rather than add to members' already crowded task lists and in-boxes, my hope is to add value by developing as a touchstone and professional resource to share the daily burdens. We may also explore how to leverage our relationships in some sort of consortia-like arrangements with vendors, consultants, and other groups that might help us all increase our effectiveness and reduce costs," said Bauman.

The group will share application and enrollment data on a monthly basis and intends to meet at the next Summer Institute. For more information please contact Joel Bauman.

Exploring Collaborations at NAC&U

The NAC&U Executive Summit at Wagner this summer explored new ways for consortium members to expand opportunities, enhance learning, and save money. Those discussions repeatedly focused on collaboration.  Topics included online collaborations, summer undergraduate research exchange, and short-term study away programs. Read more about these ideas, including how your institution could participate.
