HALLOWEEN STRESS & PETS        Dr. Hebbler's Thoughts
Halloween dogs

This time of year we all look forward to Halloween & All Hallow's Eve celebrations, dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating with family. But this particular holiday can be an unpleasant, potentially hazardous time for  beloved pets. Keep animals safe and sound during the Halloween festivities, and be cognizant of potential stressors!

Pets with known behavior challenges really should have no exposure to Halloween fun... it's just not worth the stressTake extra care with animals that are easily spooked. Loud noises can easily excite and frighten pets. Strangers approaching in strange costumes, masks, hats and certain clothing can often trigger more sensitive pets.  If possible, keep your pet(s) company in a closed room away from the Halloween trick-or-treaters, or if you will be having a party at home, consider crating dogs in the far end of the house to help with stranger stress.

Be aware that beloved black cats, and really all pets should be kept indoors several days prior to Halloween festivities (Don't forget Cabbage Night!) as some pranksters unfortunately think teasing and animal cruelty is acceptable.

Costumes for pets should be made with velcro or other breakaway materials, non-constricting, comfortable, lightweight, snag-free and loose at all times. Check the costume frequently, and remove immediately should they exhibit any signs of stress. Never leave your pet in costume unattended.

Stock up on your alternative remedies to make the evening more enjoyable for you and your pets! The essential oil Peace & Calming, the homeopathics Arsenicum Album 30c, and Aconitum Napellus 30c as well as the Bach Flowers Blend Rescue Remedy may be helpful for pets (and owners!) exhibiting or known for anxiety, and help calm those that are easily alarmed by frequent visitors, trick or treaters, and excessively loud children noises.  We are happy to provide tinctures of these remedies over the counter if desired. You should also be able to find these low-dose homeopathics at your local health food store or pharmacy.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

HALLOWEEN HAZARDS
candy corn

* Halloween candy is for humans, not animals. Everyone knows candy and chocolate are not good for pets, and can be very toxic.

Many do not know that a small amount of milk chocolate usually does nothing more than give dogs upset tummies, as well as hyper sugar & caffeine highs followed by a crash.

Large quantities of milk chocolate, as well as ANY Dark & Bakers chocolate and artificial sweeteners such as xylitol are EXTREMELY TOXIC, and need immediate Emergency Veterinary Attention.

* Cellophane wrappers, foil papers and lollipop sticks should be discarded into the garbage. These items can be hazardous to your pet if swallowed by causing intestinal obstructions and in severe cases, perforation.

* Page Dr. Hebbler on Healing Hope's urgent line for peace of mind at 877-738-4673 option 2 and head to your local  California Veterinary Specialists 24/7 Emergency Care Hospital immediately should you suspect your pet of accidentally ingesting human treats or wrappers!

*DO CARRY tasty Halloween natural pet treats with you to reward your pet during a night of Halloween fun. Stop by Healing Hope and your favorite local holistic pet store to pick up some before the big night!

* Keep your pets away from lit candles and pumpkins. They can easily knock them over, causing a fire. Cats and kittens are especially curious and could accidentally burn themselves if they get too close to an open flame.  Consider using a flame-less battery operated alternative to candles!! They are much safer for everyone!

*Visit the ASPCA Poison Control for additional information on items that can harm your pet.
