SUMMER HAZARDS FOR PETS:

A Quick Guide

Cat and Dog snuggling

Summer brings days of fun in the sun, but summer can also bring hazards to our pets.

Healing Hope highly recommends purchasing products with a green mindset to avoid accidental toxic encounters! There are many natural outdoor products available, and they are far safer for your whole family!

Lawn and garden products, toxic plants and mushrooms, and other outdoor hazards such as charcoal lighter fluid and pool chemicals, can pose problems if pets get into them. Below is a list of relative toxicity of various summer hazards to which a pet may be exposed.

  • Low toxicity products may cause gastrointestinal upset, but unlikely to cause serious problems unless large amounts are ingested: Glow jewelry, most N-P-K fertilizers, plain Bone meal, Mosquito coils or Dunks, Charcoal briquettes, some Termite stakes, ant baits, yard insecticides, and roach baits.
  • Moderate toxicity products may cause significant signs beyond mild gastrointestinal upset: Charcoal lighter fluids, Moldy items from trash, yard or compost pile, some Diazinon or chlorpyrifos granules, DEET-containing insect repellants, Citronella lamps/torches, some Spring blooming bulbs
  • High toxicity products have the potential for very serious life-threatening signs: pool chemicals, Metaldehyde, Zinc phosphide, Methomyl, Disulfoton, and Rodenticides

**In case of an emergency, please call our urgent line at 877-PET-HOPE option 2 to page Dr. Hebbler.

Healing Hope recommends always calling California Veterinary Specialists (CVS) for 24/7 Emergency Pet Care.

TRAFFIC ALERT!

If you are driving to Solana Beach in the next month, we recommend avoiding the Via de la Valle exit, as the San Diego County Fair is upon us, and traffic can be hectic. Starting July 4th the Del Mar races will be in effect, which can also greatly impede travel time.

Try an alternate exit on the 5 interstate like Del Mar Heights Rd or Lomas Sante Fe Drive, or take the scenic 101 Pacific Coast Highway to visit us!

Please allow extra time for travel, so that your visit length will not be affected.

The Gentle Barn

Eliza and Cow

This past weekend, Eliza had a wonderful opportunity to visit "The Gentle Barn" in Santa Clarita, CA, and was so impressed by her experience that she wanted to share the news with all of the Healing Hope family!

The Gentle Barn is a non-profit organization farm that rescues and rehabilitates animals from severe abuse, neglect, and slaughter and provides them a loving, caring home to live the rest of their lives in safety and peace.

Once rehabilitated, the animals become ambassadors, teaching at risk, special needs, and school groups of children about farm life, kindness, and compassion.

"We believe that everyone deserves a chance at life, regardless if they are blind, crippled, deformed, sick, wounded, or just old.

At The Gentle Barn, the animals leave when they are done, not when someone is done with them!"

-Ellie,

Founder of the Gentle Barn

The ultimate goal is to open Gentle Barn's across the country so that every animal and child can have a place of healing and safety and where they can be seen for the perfect beings that they are. Since its inception, The Gentle Barn has been home to hundreds of animals and host to over 100,000 people.

Please consider visiting the Gentle Barn! There are many volunteer opportunities, and donations are always needed and always appreciated.
