Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

September 29th, 2012

Wow, it has been a long time since I have been able to at stay home on a Saturday morning. Hence, the forecast of a rainy day, gave me reason to "play hooky" and sip on some coffee this morning. What a joy to relax a little and listen to the rain hit the tin roof.  Speaking of rain, we desperately need some. It is so dry up here that our county has recently had a burn ban in place.

Hopefully, we'll have these for the next several weeks!

Whole Foods Houston?  Back in about March, I was asked to participate in a "local farmer event" at the Whole Foods Kirby location. While there, I got to visit with the store produce manager, aka "Team Leader."  One thing led to another and several months later,  WDF is now a "bona fide Whole Food produce vendor."  So now what? When i went to visit several of the Houston area WF stores this past week, they were all kinda' shocked, yet excited, to see some local produce become available to them direct. (That's right, grown right here just north of Houston. ) So now we need to prove to them that our stuff is as good, or better, than the "industrial organic" produce brought in from California. So this where you can help.  Should you occasionally shop at WF, enjoy our produce, and/or like to support local farms, you can do us a favor by telling (or leaving a note for) the respective produce "team leaders or assistants" that you hope to see our "produce goodies" on their vegetable racks soon.    Naturally, we (WDF) are limited to offering them items that are seasonal, and that we have excess of, such as butternut squash, eggplant, summer squash, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and jalapeno peppers. The WF locations that we are currently servicing are the following:
  • Kirby
  • Bellaire
  • Woodway
  • Montrose
So please consider voicing to Whole Foods that you prefer to "Buy Local,"  hopefully WDF, when available; that is of course when it is of equal/better quality. By the way, our stuff is not grown from GMO seed either. As the seasons change, so will our variety with items such as kale, beets, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower etc

The "Back 40"    Progress Slow But Steady!
Pictured above, this Sudan Grass w/Milo was planted  back in late July to be a cover crop for about five of our newly cleared acres. You can you see that the crop, that rests on a knoll, is a little stunted due to our late summer drought? When tilled under, the shredded residue will provide lots of organic matter for the depleted soil that was a pine forest just earlier this year. We'll likely be planting some of our 30,000 strawberries plants here come late October/early November. Hopefully the deer will not find this plot to be yet another "WDF salad bar!"

West Univ & Upper Kirby/Montrose PU Locations? Interested in picking up at one of these two locations? Unfortunately we are not able to announce these two specific locations at this time. While we have some locations under consideration, we cannot begin deliveries to them at this time. We recommend that you select either the St. Paul's Methodist Church/Museum District or the Dunn Bros. Coffee house. Once these other locations become available, you can switch to them if you like. (We are hoping that it will only be a few weeks.)

Ready For Harvest In A Few Days

Like To Participate In Our CSA, But Will Be Gone Some This Fall? Consider our Alternating Week Share and/or splitting a share with a friend/relative. An easy way to split is for you take the whole share one week and defer it to your partner another week. Just include their email address when you register. Sorry, we don't have provisions for splitting credit card payments.

Woodlands Home Delivery For You? For those of you living in zip codes 77380,77381,77382,77384 consider, at a slightly higher coast, trying our home delivery service. Delivery days are Thursday's, normally after 3 pm.  Just go to the CSA link at   Fall CSA Program & Registration  and select the Woodlands Home Delivery tab.

Local Eggs? The change in seasons has resulted in the hens becoming a little confused and consequently egg production is way way down. So egg availability is limited and requires that we source from farms other than just Dustin's Eggs. All of our eggs are local free range eggs and feed on rich non GMO grain diets.
