Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

June 10th, 2012

Well Shucks! I believe everyone in SE Texas received some rain this past week except our little 87 acres. Just about 3 miles south of us, they received about 3 inches. Oh well, perhaps we'll just have to be patient. The good news is that we are planning on digging a new well or two in the next week. Hopefully, more water for irrigation will be available soon.

What's Growing: If the racoons don't tear down all the stalks, we are hoping to harvest some sweet corn this week, along with more slicer tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, green beans, new potatoes and arugula. We are optimistic that we can harvest the  remaining beds of our spring  broccoli as well (yep! racoons don't like broccoli.) Our peach growers up above Centerville, are telling us that the early peach crop is about complete, with the larger summer peaches coming into full force in a week or two.

Summer CSA Program Begins In About Ten Days: The coming week is the tenth and final delivery week of the Spring CSA Program.  Not to worry, we are planning on heading right into the ten week summer program. For more info and registration visit this link  Summer CSA Program & Registration.  For a short tutorial, consider reviewing the following instructions:

1) Once at the above link, click your desired pick up location, select continue, this will take you to our shopping cart.

2) Then choose your desired share size where you select "add to order"

3) Then place your mouse over the first available date, i.e. june 19th, 20th, 21 st etc. The date should turn yellow, right click your mouse and all the dates should light up green.

4) Then select "CONTINUE" , and/or scroll down to add items to your CSA pick up order for any particular week, i.e. eggs, honey etc. Follow the prompts to complete and purchase.

Free Range Eggs  As mentioned last week, we are now about to enter into the heat of the summer, and if you did not know, hens and laying are impacted negatively by the stresses of summer heat. As of now our egg producer, Dustin's Eggs and his hens, are not being adversely hurt with a decline in egg production, but just be aware that this is a possibility.

From the "back 40," lots of brush piles needing to be burned before this land can be readied for crop production. These flames reached close to 35' high last week.

Until Next Time,
