Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

June 3rd, 2012

Summer, although not official yet, appears to have arrived in full force as daytime temps approach the mid 90's every day. We're still  being blessed with an occasional morning low below 70F or so, but that is a rarity. Nighttime lows below 70F are important for the pollination of many spring vegetables, especially some varieties of "beefsteak type" tomatoes, cherry tomato types not so much.  Speaking of tomatoes, both cherry and slicer types are being harvested daily. While many of our recent days are accompanied by cloud cover, a lot of sunshine still persists, This unfortunately results in some of our slicers getting what is referred to as "sun scald." Kinda' like a sunburn; so if you receive one of our tomatoes with what appears to be an inch or more of puffy skin, that is likely what it is. Along with tomato season, comes pests such as worms. While we don't spray chemical based pesticides, we do spray natural based "worm killers." One such spray is referred to as Bt.  It is important for everyone to understand that the primary difference between organic and conventionally grown produce is that organic sprays are natural and not chemical based. To read additional info about the organic uses of Bt, visit this link from the Univ. of California  More About Bt

What's Growing: Weeds are in full swing, along with tomatoes, bell peppers green beans, potatoes, squash, watermelon, brussel sprouts, cantaloupe, squash and more.

Back 40! A lot of you have not heard from us in few weeks as if we are not farming or delivering, we're working hard at clearing the "back 40 acres" that we purchased back in January. Our efforts have been very productive. While we have a lot more work to do, we can can begin to see the lay of the land which is great from our perspective. Most of this ground is comprised of a sandy soil which lays a top an elevated knoll. A subtle depression travels east-west through about mid way, which may prove to be a drainage outlet or perhaps an area from which we can dig a pond; possibly both.

Free Range Eggs  We are now about to enter into the heat of the summer, and if you did not know, hens and laying are impacted negatively by the stresses of summer heat. As of now our egg producer, Dustin's Eggs and his hens, are not being adversely hurt with a decline in egg production, but just be aware that this is a possibility.
