Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

Wood Duck Farm

February 24th, 2012

Well now we have these fantastic tasting sustainably grown strawberries, but it was not without a little effort. Some of you will recall reading that we started planting some of them back in late August, and the balance in October.

Nope that is not a blanket of snow above, it is row cover that we use to keep the ground warmth "in" and the frost off our berries. Basically the cloth provides between 4 & 6 degrees of protection to the blooms. If you loose the blooms, you loose the fruit. While we are not thinking that we are frost free just yet, it is time to start planting potatoes, green beans, sweet corn and more. Oh yes, transplanting our tomato seedlings  is in our near future too. Squash, peppers and melons not too far away either as Spring fast approaches.

Shown above, our farm hands are cutting the last crowns from this fall planted broccoli crop. (First you cut the heads, and then the crown emerge as subsequent growth.) If you "squint" you can see the yellow flowers of the "bolting broccoli" which is "Mother Nature's" way of insuring future seed generations. The bees like it too. Broccoli over? No way! We've got several more crops in the "pipeline."

In our CSA Full shares this past week shown above, top row L-R: sugar snap peas, brussel's sprouts, micro arugula, two+ pints of strawberries, microgreen blend. Bottom row: L-R: 2 heads Romaine lettuce, 2 heads broccoli, head cauliflower, 2 bunches mustard greens.

Next week's share forecast? Pretty similar to this week's: broccoli, brussel's sprouts, strawberries, sugar snaps, kale and more.
