Wood Duck Farm February 3rd, 2012 Last week my son and I were riding down a Sam Houston National Forest road and I noticed where the forest service had "under brushed" around the trees that bordered the road. The large pines were beautiful and that got me to thinking that some of you might be interested in riding a bike, or going for a walk/jog in such a pretty environment. Hunting season is behind us now and the weather is still pleasant, so consider coming up to the farm on Sunday, February 19th and bringing your bike and/or walking/running shoes. This will be a "go at your own schedule" type of outing. You can go for a ride/walk and then return to have a picnic lunch and your choice of beverage. You can bring your own goody basket or we'll have some sandwiches, soup and salads for sale. For those of you that are interested in hearing about the bicycle route, you will likely walk, perhaps 1/4 mile. from the back of our farm to a paved country road where one route will entail a loop about 14 miles. The first 6 miles are hard packed dirt road, that I think all tires will suffice., the remaining 8 miles will be mostly paved country roads. Looking for something shorter, well just turn around. For bikers perhaps looking for a serious work out, I think we can find a 40 mile route pretty easily. We'll make some maps to be handed out etc. Historically the average high/low temp for Feb. 19th is a high of 65F and a 44F low. There is no charge for this outing and it is open to all, not just CSA members, so feel free to forward this info to interested parties. We ask that you bring your own bikes/repair kits etc. and a cell phone for emergency. (we'll come get you if you need support.) Kids okay, pets not okay. We'll send out more info later. Oh, when I mentioned "swim" in the subject heading, it has been raining a lot here at WDF, about 12 inches in the last month, so yes you might be able to swim too. Above a photo of the Sam Houston Forest Service Road running behind WDF farm. Consider visiting us and taking a walk/ride while the weather is still cool. What's Growing? Cauliflower, beets, spinach, broccoli, fennel, turnips, mustard, radish and more. In the greenhouse, lots of tomato seedlings. Saturday Farmer's Mkt Sorry,we will not be at the Urban Harvest farmer's tomorrow. Regrets! New Chef at the Farm As mentioned last week, we are pleased to announce that we have added a seasoned chef to our farm culinary team. Yep, Chef Stephanie Meade has agreed to manage our farm kitchen located in our ol' school house. Stephanie attended the Art Institute of Houston's School of Culinary Arts. After a few years of apprenticeship in various Houston restaurants, she landed a position as Sous Chef for Bon Appetite, which managed the corporate dinning facility for Anadarko Petroleum of the Woodlands. While rising to the position of Catering Director was indeed enlightening, Stephanie decided to become a stay at home mom. Now a few years later, she is ready to get back into the kitchen and help us here at WDF. So over the next few weeks look for her prepared food options to be announced weekly via email. Hopefully, we will begin our online ordering system this next week where you can order online by next Friday and pick up the following week (Feb 13th - 15th) at one of our 13 CSA locations. This option will also be available to our Woodlands Home Delivery service. Until Next Time,
