Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

Wood Duck Farm

January 2nd, 2012

In spite of the summer drought, 2011 was a good year and we are optimistic that 2012 will be even better. With our friends Joyce and Matt, we are currently updating our website so that it will include an online shopping cart . While it may be another week or so  before we debut the new shopping cart, the plan is to offer items that one might be able find at your local farmer's market. Some of these items might include artisan cheese, local
honey, Texas olive oil, free range eggs, pastured meats, prepared foods and more
. Weekly orders will be due the Friday prior, and available for pick up the following week at a pre-determined/selected CSA drop off location.  Another development for  2012, will be home delivery option for the Woodlands area. This option will be limited to a few zip codes and include office delivery as well. We expect to offer this service with the Winter/Spring CSA program that is to begin in a few weeks. Hopefully we'll have more info on this program in the next week or so.

Last week we took a short break and visited New Orleans for a few days. We also visited a few farms while there.  Above is Timmy Perilloux of Montz, LA.  Below is Eric Morrow of Ponchatoula. To read more about visit, go to our farm blog link at Louisiana Winter Triperic

Winter/Spring CSA Shares:  Our next CSA program is scheduled to begin the first week of February.   Our anticipated winter harvest will include cold hardy crops such as cauliflower, spinach, brussells sprouts, carrots, beets, collards, onions, kale, purple kohlrabi, cilantro, radishes, mustard greens, salad mix, broccoli, potatoes, stored winter squash etc. Winter fruit? Hopefully we'll have citrus and strawberries too.   Visit this link to learn more Winter/Sprng CSA, 2012  So how much comes in a share? What's Growing?    Can you believe that it is time to begin sowing tomato seeds for the spring.  Yep! this past weekend we did our first seeding of Cherokee Purple and Pink Brandywine, both heirloom tomato varieties. We'll plant both heirlooms and hybrid seeds and sow about 2000 plugs per week over the next month. The tomato seeds germinate and grow in hour greenhouses until they are ready to be transplanted into the fields in March. What Else? Over the past month, we have planted about 27,000 onion sets along with more carrots, garlic, beets, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli. With the shortest day of winter, December 22nd, now behind us the daylight hours will gradually begin to lengthen. Given a little more sunshine, our field crops will begin to accelerate, Our water situation has improved a lot. I saw where we received more rain in the third week of December than during the five months between February and June last year. It is evident, as all 9 acres of our farm ponds almost close to normal levels.

Until Next Time,
