Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

Wood Duck Farm

Many of you are probably aware of the term "Slow Food" originating over the past few years by socially conscious consumers wishing to subtly protest genetically modified crops and global factory farms, aka "fast food." So with today, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, being touted nationally as "Small Business Saturday," aka "Buy Locally Saturday," we thought it appropriate to mention a similar community based mindset that is evolving nationally. Yep, you guessed it, it's called "Slow Money." This philosophy has found "roots" in both Austin and Dallas over the past year, and is poised to become viable here in Houston as well.  Should we understand the concept correctly, local minded citizens attend "networking get togethers" to hear about investments in regional food systems such as farms, dairies, ranches etc that practice/maintain environmental, social and cultural sustainability. These "get togethers"  are sometimes organized as a "LION" aka a Local Investing Opportunities Network.  To paraphrase a LION website located in Washington State,... LION is not an investment fund, and it does not make collective investment decisions. Our membership consists of local citizens who want to invest their money locally, thereby putting their investing money to work within our community. Keeping funds local facilitates greater economic self-sufficiency, job growth, economic development, and a dollar-multiplier effect whereby a dollar kept within the community can be spent many times over for a far greater benefit than a dollar invested away from our community. Totally confused yet? You're likely asking..LION? "Slow Money?" ...what the heck is the difference ?"    An answer from our friend Joyce...."the difference is that 'Slow Money' focuses on soil/agriculture, whereas one could make a LION to focus on the needs/wants of the group. Wish to learn more about how this farm backing network is evolving in Texas?  Visit Slow Money Texas  FYI, Austin is hosting a networking event next Friday evening, Dec 2nd.  Wish to get involved here in Houston? An exploratory meeting for a Houston based LION/"Slow Money network", spearheaded by Joyce, our Montrose area CSA host, is scheduled for early December. If you are interested in learning more about and/or attending please email us (consider inserting "Slow $" in the subject line) and we'll make sure you get the invite.

Farm Open House,Next Saturday Dec. 3rd  We are having our Fall Open House here at the farm next Saturday. This event is open to everyone. Times are 1:30-dark .  We'll have a farm tour and pot luck dinner. The weather forecast is for next Saturday, Dec, 3rd, to be partly cloudy and a cool 62F. The recent rains have allowed our county to lift the burn ban, so we can now have a camp fire.  Perhaps a little hot chocolate and S'mores anyone?   What about restrooms? Yep, we've got'em. Visit School House Pics to see some photos of our farm kitchen etc. We are located about one hour north of Houston, 25 mins from Kingwood and 30 mins from the Woodlands. Directions and maps can be found on our website at  Map & Directions to WDF Wish to visit our farm, but not a CSA member? Not to worry, you're invited to our open house too!

What to bring to the Open House? Please bring your own folding chairs, jacket/vest and, if you plan on staying for dinner, possibly something for the pot luck buffet, (FYI we can heat up your dishes if need be.) A flashlight might be a good idea too. If you are coming please reply to this email and let us know your headcount, adults, kids etc.

Alcohol ok? This is a family event, so please drink responsibly.

Winter CSA Program:  Our Winter CSA registration will likely begin in a few days. The winter program will consist of ten weeks that should ideally begin the first week of February and go to first week of April, give or take.  Our anticipated winter harvest will include cold hardy crops such as cauliflower, spinach, brussells sprouts, carrots, beets, collards, onions, kale, purple kohlrabi, cilantro, radishes, mustard greens, salad mix, broccoli, potatoes, butternut squash etc. Winter fruit? Hopefully we'll have citrus and strawberries too.  More info to follow.

Fall CSA:  Yikes! Hard freeze expected this week here at the farm. Four weeks to go. This past week, full shares included satsumas citrus, butternut squash, green beans, sweet potatoes, salad greens, arugula, a fall tomato, micro greens.
