Wood Duck Farm
October 24th, 2011
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of experiencing a truly great tasting persimmon. Other than using them as weapons, yes throwing them at each other via neighborhood skirmishes as kid, I never had much of a desire to taste them. All I remember was them being too tart for my palate. In any event this past weekend I was able to secure some "no chemical sprayed" persimmons of the Tananashi variety. The key is that they are picked kinda' hard and they need a little time to ripen. I am sure that some of you are persimmon experts. so I welcome your input if I make an error. In any event, when they get real soft, they taste excellent. I'll have to find out, but I am not sure if the skins are useful. What to do with them? The central Texas farmer told me that folks like to put them in breads, pudding, ice cream and what not. Once ripe they can be frozen too. Ironically, they ripen faster with refrigeration. Should we have a good experience with them this week, we'll have access to them for another month or so.
This Week's CSA Share Includes: Portabella Mushrooms, Fall Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Baby Arugula, Tananashi Persimmons and more.
Strawberry Update: A few weeks ago we transplanted about 5,000 strawberry plants into the ground directly under the shade cloth in five of our large greenhouses. I about had a seizure soon thereafter as, once planted, the plants started looking really bad. I spoke with some veteran strawberry growers in Louisiana, and they told me not too worry to much "....just keep the water too them!" Well while we have only 1 1/2" of rain over the past four weeks, we've irrigated the devil out of them. Also the temps have dropped quite a bit; in fact we might touch the high 30's come this Friday morning here at the farm. We are happy to report that the strawberry plants are looking a lot better now. This is good news as we've got another 8,000 bare roots arriving this week from Quebec... Canada that is. Outstanding in the Field: This past weekend I had the great pleasure of visiting Jolie Vue Farm over near Brenham as they were once again hosts to Outstanding in the Field event. I am guessing that they were over 200 folks there attending. This event was created to bring local minded foodies out to the farm for dinner. The guest chef this year was Paul Lewis of Cullen's in Clear Lake. Jolie Vue's website can be found at http://jolievuefarms.com/
