Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

Wood Duck Farm

June 9th, 2011

Like everyone in SE Texas, our farm is undergoing a lot of stress from the prolonged drought. We've moved our livestock/poultry to the woods for shade and irrigate almost non-stop. Unfortunately, the wildlife is being adversely affected as well and seem to love eating our tomatoes before we can pick many of them. The primary culprit seem to be raccoons as we find many a "scarfed-out" tomato every morning amidst the foot paths that separate the rows of trellised tomatoes. Fortunately we have enough for everyone, including the raccoons.  We're still continuing to plant tomatoes, cantaloupe, squash etc as we prepare for the soon to be hotter weather.

FARM OPEN HOUSE:A few weeks ago we had over sixty adults and lots of kiddos' attend our Spring 2011 Open House here at the farm. The weather was hot, but merciful as a steady breeze kept us cool for the most part. We started off with a farm tour where lots of kids and adults alike piled onto the tractor towed hay wagon. While others traveled on foot, we made a short circle around some of the growing areas where a brief explanation of what was growing was provided by yours truly.  We returned to the ol' schoolhouse where our friend, Charmaine LeBlanc, provided a one hour demo on canning everything from green beans, to pickles, to peach preserves. Meanwhile some of the kids enjoyed playing dodge-ball underneath a water sprinkler to escape the heat. The evening was wrapped up with a "pot-luck" dinner.

WEBSITE UPDATE:  As mentioned a few weeks back, we'd like to once again thank Joyce and Matt, our devoted hosts at the Upper Kirby Location, for their diligent work on our website and stream-lining our online  CSA registration. Almost all of our CSA summer registrations over the past week or so have had no issues, so we're thinking that most, if not all, of the bugs that some of you experienced back in May are now fixed.

SUMMER CSA: Our summer CSA deliveries begin next week, June 15th. We still have openings, so please visit this link if you are interested in subscribing at   CSA Registration

One topic worth mentioning is that we wish for everyone to register online if at all possible. You can still elect to pay with a check or cash, but registering online will insure that you are on the delivery list.  (Sorry, progress sometimes does not come without sacrifice.)

FALL CREEK LOCATION ADDRESS CHANGE:

This is not yet reflected on our website, as we just made this change today. Our Fall Creek Location has changed to be
#8202 Emerald Meadow lane, 77396. The delivery day/time will continue to be Wednesday's 2:30-5:30.

A link to this location can be found at the following:

We'd like to thank Ana for all of her generousity being our host over the past few years and wish her a great summer!

SPRING CSA With our Spring CSA having now been completed for the most part, we'd like to thank all of you that participated and helped support our farm and staff over the past few months.  We realize that everything was not flawless, as we made some mistakes along the way, but we think that overall the program was a nice success.   We hope that your experience was a good one and hope that you will participate again in future programs.

 All the Best,

Van Weldon
