Wood Duck Farm

Spring 2011 CSA Update
...

Wood Duck Farm

March 16, 2011

Just a brief update to welcome some of you that have recently joined out CSA program and bring those of you current that  don't read our farm update.

While parts of Houston received a little rain here on Monday, we unfortunately did not.  Not to worry as we are for the most part irrigated and optimistic that our plants will remain healthy throughout the spring and later into summer. If this is your first time interacting or being part of a farm, you will soon find that  most farmers are difficult to please. What I mean is that it's either too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry. Here at WDF we've learned not  to vocalize our complaints too much though as for the most part things are out of our hands anyway. Hopefully the situation in Japan will soon find a remedy and we will not be complaining about "glowing beets" anytime soon.

What's Growing?   At our lease down the road  we have broccoli, cauliflower, Pac Choi, green garlic and onions growing fairly nicely. Here at the farm we have salad greens, arugula, beets, carrots  up and growing. We planted radishes, salad turnips and spinach on Sunday ahead of the supposed rain, so we're having to overhead water those newly planted beds almost non-stop.  Other crops such as green beans and potatoes are doing well. Most of  our tomato plants are ready to be transplanted this week.  We've prepared most of their beds and hopefully will begin transferring them from the greenhouses  to the field tomorrow. Other crops such as radicchio, summer squash, cucumbers and zucchini will be ready for transferring to the field in another week or so.

Grass Fed Meat/Egg Subscription Program:Our pastured poultry program is going good. We still have more to learn, but our mortality rate with critters and the weather is improving.  While we started out with more, we have put about 75 chickens or so in our two freezers.  The pigs are happy and ready to go lodge in the woods for the summer to escape the sun. For those of you in these programs, we'll keep you posted in advance when we will make our first delivery in April.

Extra Eggs? We've found another local grower that might be able to help us with some of your requests about acquiring extra eggs. I've got to figure out how to do this. As soon as I have a plan, I'll let you know.

When Do We Begin? As mentioned in our last farm update, we are hoping to begin deliveries the week of April 4th-6th . Why are we running behind?  The freezes back in January were more severe than we expected, which required us to replant some crops, putting us behind a little.
