Wood Duck Farm
March 10, 2011
For the first time since late January, due to the hard freeze, we were able to harvest baby arugula here at the farm this week. While we think our arugula is always special, this week was extra special as a lot of our production went to benefit the Urban Harvest Spring Gala held at Trevisio's on Wednesday evening. We also contributed the Genovese mico basil that garnished the dessert. Speaking of Trevisio, Executive Chef Jon Buchanan will be "manning" the kitchen at our upcoming dinner here at our farm. If you missed the Urban Harvest event and wish to tour our farm, as well as enjoy a five course meal, then consider joining us on Saturday evening, April 2nd. For more insight go to this link April 2nd Farm Dinner Info to find the menu, as well as view photos from our 2010 farm dinners. The Saturday evening dinner will begin with a reception staring around 3:45 or 4:15 , followed by a farm tour around 5:00, with our first dinner course to begin around 6:00.-6:30. The final course will likely be complete around 8:30-9:00. Seating is "family style" so no matter if you are a party of one or twenty, you'll have more friends when you leave than when you arrived.
What's Growing? Funny how just a mile or so made a difference in rainfall amounts last weekend as here at the farm we received less than ¼ inch, whereas our lease down the road received over an inch. The broccoli and onions seemed to really benefit from the rains, and while we didn't get as much rain as we would have liked, the overcast skies were a gift, as some of the direct seeding that we did last week, i.e. carrots, beets and green beans welcomed the moist soil and seem to be popping up just fine through the soil. Unfortunately weed seeds like the warm moist soil also. About our tomatoes? Well we thought we would start transplanting into the field this week, but we had some issues and decided to "bump" our older plants up to larger pots instead. While this is not my preferred choice, sometimes you have to "play the deck that is dealt you." We're still a little early, which means maybe will be on time...ever thought like that? Our first batch of yellow squash and cucumbers are now nice looking one-week-old plants. Parsley and fennel are young, but looking good also. We've got some Hungarian Peppers started, but they are growing real slow, perhaps they're not convinced that spring is here. CSA members reading this, we are thinking the week of April 7th-9th will begin our Spring 2011 program deliveries. We'll be in touch with more information.
