Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

Wood Duck Farm

November19th, 2010

So how good are these turkey's we're smoking? On Wednesday of this week I was driving in my farm truck on the way to the Wednesday City Hall Farmer's Market and waved at a DPS trooper heading the opposite direction. Well  I immediately noticedin my rear view mirror the DPS do "a 180" turn heading back in the same direction I was heading. Next, you guessed it, the lights went on and I pulled over to find out from the Trooper that my registration was out. The Topper was real polite and proceeded to check my license out etc, you know to make sure no warrants were pending etc. Well after a brief visit on his radio, he came back to the truck and it turns out we had paid for the registration, but had just failed to place the sticker on the windshield. About that time, he said "...did you know your State Inspection was out as well?"  Along about the same time he asked "..what is that great smell coming from your cab?" I replied, "I'm heading to a farmers mkt. and that is some turkey that I just finished smoking. By the way would you like a sandwich?"  He pondered for a moment and then said "...make sure you get that inspection taken care of and have a nice day."  Folks later told me that I broke the law via a bribe. What the heck, my smoked turkey's saved the day.

We just finished week six of our ten week Fall CSA program. Shares this past week received an assortment of veggies including the following:

Sweet Potatoes

Green Beans

Kale

Micro Greens

Baby Arugula
Salad Mix

Grape Fruit

With the Thanksgiving Holiday next week, we are skipping a week with our CSA deliveries. We will begin taking CSA share applications for our Winter/Spring 2011 CSA program later in December.   For a link to where we deliver and drop off boxes of locally grown produce, visit CSA Pickup Locations

This Week at the Farm The cooler weather has lowered our soil temps a tad, which is making everything grow a little slower. We began enclosing our lettuce/arugula houses earlier this week, which should help a little. Still growing well are green beans, summer squash, broccoli, cauliflower, our lettuces, radish, amongst other things. We are running behind on our winter plantings of onions, garlic, shallots etc, but hope to catch up soon.

Smoked Turkeys With Thanksgiving nearby, we still have three or four turkeys available for smoking and needing a home. Deadline is tomorrow, Saturday, as it takes a few days to brine our birds and then smoke them with red oak grown right here on our farm. We have a few locations around the Houston area, see link below, where you can pick up your birds early next week. Prices are as follow:

10-12 lb. trussed bird $42
12-14 lb. trussed bird $49
16-18 lb. trussed bird $63

Last Saturday's Farm Dinner November 13th    We cannot boast enough about our last farm dinner of the year. The rain early in the morning was a little scary, but the clouds broke and the sun came out.  We decided not to take a chance with the weather however, and held dinner inside the "ol' school house" which was so cozy.  After dinner, everyone moved out to the campfire and partook in more wine and rejoiced in the fine fellowship. Our featured guest chef, Jon Buchanan, Executive Chef at Trevisio, did an outstanding job with a little assistance of some culinary students.  We wish to not only thank Chef Jon and his crew, but all of the chefs that collaborated in our five farm dinners held this year. For those interested in seeing photos and menus of our prior events, please visit 2010 Farm Dinners . For pics of last Saturday's event, visitNov 13th Farm Dinner on FaceBook We look forward to hosting more dinners in 2011 and hope you can join us.

CSA Open House  We will hold our open house for CSA members the first Saturday of December. (Not a CSA member, but wish to come check it out, just let us know.) The event will be kid friendly and a "pot luck" dinner. Those interested can camp out as well and enjoy the campfire and late autumn weather; bring your own tent though.   No pets please.

FYI, we will be at the Woodlands Farmer's Market tomorrow a.m. , and for the next several weeks as well.

Visiting the Urban Harvest Farmer's Mktl on Saturday morning or Wednesday's at lunch? Please stop by and say hi!

Incidentally, a lot of our farm events and details can be found on our Face Book page as well. Find us on Facebook
