Wood Duck Farm

Our Update
...a periodic reflection of what's going on at the farm

Wood Duck Farm

October29th, 2010

This week at the farm we began with an excellent dinner event this past Sunday, hosted by Guest Chef Justin Bayse of Stella Sola.  Go to this link to read more,  My Table Farm Dinner Article This was our second in a series of our All Star Chef Line Up here at the farm. The next dinner is about two weeks away, Saturday, November 13th  More info provided below. The week ended up with us having students from the Kingwood Montessori School visiting our farm yesterday. We did the whole "hayride behind the tractor" tour of the farm with kids getting to see our pastured chickens, baby pigs, big pigs and lots of walking in the corn patch. We ended up with a lunch comprised of our own "home grown" salad greens, hot bread and apple juice.  A nice day it was.

We are in the third week of our Fall 2010 CSA program.  Shares this week received an assortment of veggies including the following:

Green Beans

Turnips

Butter Nut Squash

Tomatoes

Micro Greens

Portabella Mushrooms

Cucumbers

Radishes

Baby Arugula and/or Salad Mix

For those of you not familiar with the term, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is a direct partnership between you and the farmer. C.S.A. members pay in advance for a share of the upcoming harvest, thus the farmer is ensured a consistent market and the consumer is ensured high-quality local produce. Produce is delivered to many of our Houston neighborhood pick-up locations within 24 hrs. of harvesting. For a link to where we deliver, visit CSA Pickup Locations

What's growing?  While the weather is pretty nice, the plants really require a lot of water when the humidity is so low and the breezy conditions remain so constant. We have to run our wells almost around the clock to keep everything irrigated.  In light of the dry conditions, the plants like the weather.  The bugs seem to be suppressed as well.  The forecast is for it to be in the 30's here tomorrow morning; we'll see if some of these weeds can get "zapped' a little with a subtle frost.  Our sweet corn is a few weeks away, but the raccoons seem to be taking a liking to them already. We'll keep you posted. Broccoli and cauliflower are a few weeks away as well. More green beans, turnips, salad greens coming for sure next week.
