Wood Duck Farm
October15th,
2010
This past week
was busy, busy, busy as our first deliveries for our Fall CSA program coincided
with the grand opening of the Houston City Hall Farmer's Market on
Wednesday.
For those of
you that work/live downtown, the City Hall Farmer's Mkt. should be something
that you should begin to look forward to as every Wednesday, 10-2, the
reflecting pool city park in front of City Hall will be surrounded with food
vendors and local farmers alike. Some
folks might be interested in a lunch alternative to eating in the "tunnel;"
whereas those that remember to bring/store coolers in their car trunks can
consider purchasing local goodies at midday.
(Translated, that may mean a little less commute time as one can bypass
the grocery store stop on the way home.) Not sure if this idea will work if
you're not already logged onto FaceBook, but try this link Houston
City Hall Farmers Mkt on Facebook to see some photos of this past
Wednesday's market. More info on the
Mkt. may be found at Wednesday
City Hall Farmers Market
Members of our CSA program received an assortment of veggies including eggplant, green beans,
radishes, yellow summer squash, cucumbers, portebella mushrooms and salad mix.
Full shares received an extra bag or two of baby arugula and/or salad mix as
well.
What's Growing? Same on same on! No rain, but we're doing okay. The cooler nights and shorter days
are inhibiting our tomatoes from turning red. Not really sure what to do about
that situation. Still planting every week, beets, carrots, arugula, lettuce,
radicchio, some more spinach, radish.
More broccoli and cauliflower to go in the ground soon. Green beans
looking okay as well as sweet potatoes.
Our Butternut and Acorn Squash are running a little behind schedule. Our Sweet Corn is about three feet high. Some looking good, some not.
Outstanding in the Field Thanks Chef Paul Lewis & Staff for an
outstanding evening last Saturday over at Jolie Vue Farm in Chapel Hill. The
weather was fantastic as well as the food. This was a great gathering from
which to meet new acquaintances, as well as reconnect with current friends. Part of being a guest farmer is
that you are requested to speak to other guests about what your farm grows etc. A few times speaking is good, but along
about repeat #8 I started getting a little tired. Oh well it was all for fun
and good times. Try this link Outstanding
in the Field Pics to see some photos on FaceBook.
