Wood Duck Farm
September 3rd, 2010
Not much time to comment, but this
week turned out to be very productive here on farm. What did we do? Well most
of our efforts were focused on spreading lots of compost w/fertilizer and
transplanting more of the starter plug plants that were sowed in our
greenhouses several weeks ago. A little
rain today, made it even better. Other good news this week is that we received
permission from the First Methodist Church, West Chase campus to use their
facility as a pick up location for our fall CSA program. We are thinking that this location will be a
Tuesday pickup. That brings us to having nine combined pick up locations for Houston,
Kingwood and the Woodlands. We have some additional leads working for another
location or two and will let you know accordingly. For an overview of where we
deliver, visit CSA Pick Up Locations
Farm Dinners? As
mentioned previously, our Saturday October 2nd dinner will have
Justin Yu, Seth Siegel-Gardner and possibly Terrence Gallivan from the
Just8August project as our guest chefs.
This week, Allison Cook wrote a great review of these talented chefs in
her Houston Chronicle Restaurant Review, so take a look at Allison
Cook's Just 8 Project Review . You can view some of their creativity on You
Tube as well at Just8August Project You Tube Tickets can be purchased at our Urban Harvest
Farmer's Market booth on Saturday morning or via PayPal on our website at Farm Dinner PayPal Purchase . Prices are
$75 per person and the event will be BYOB. We will begin with a reception
around 3:30 or so and will start our farm tour around 4 or 4:30. The dinner menu will focus on locally
grown/raised food and will likely include five courses and wrap up around 9 pm
or so. If you missed last week's
update, you can read more about these talented chefs at these two links JustAugust
Project Chronicle andJust

Please take note that our Sunday
afternoon, November 7th dinner will feature Guest Chef LJ Wiley of
Yelapa Playa Mexicana. Chef Wiley was recently nominated in My Table
Magazine for "Best Up-and-Coming Chef!".
Chef Wiley is an avid supporter of "buying local" as he visits us, and other
area growers, every Saturday morning at the Urban Harvest Farmer's Market. His
resume includes attending the French Culinary Institute (FCI): working
at Smith & Wollensky, Brennan's, and Jean Georges Vongerichten Spice Market
in NYC. This link may provide you some insight Houston
Chronicle Yelapa Review about Chef
Wiley.
Educational Farm Tours for the Kidos? We recently had a Montessori school inquire
about bringing some of their students to our farm for a tour. So "come one,
come all" is what we're "talking about." With
the great autumn weather forthcoming and our fields about to begin looking good
again, we can't think of a better time of year to show youngsters how a real
working farm looks and operates. We can
demonstrate composting & worms, pastured pigs & poultry, and lots of
veggies growing in the ground as well.
Heck we may even throw in a hayride. We need groups of 14 students or
more, and teachers can come free. A "just picked" salad lunch may be an option as well. Let us know if you're interested.
