a look back and special thanks!...

While it's time to look forward, we can't help but look back and see how far we've come since opening our market in May of 2010!  Special thanks to our regular customers, to the community of Fairbanks and especially the owners of Del Rayo Village; to all the locavores who frequent not only the RSF Farmers Market, but all the farmers markets throughout San Diego County each week, and help our local farmers to thrive! Also, huge thanks to the Helen Woodward volunteers, and to our regular bloggers Andrea Drexelius of French Basketeer, and Dr. Tony Puopolo (writing is not an easy endeavor!) for making the newsletter informative and current, to all of our followers on Facebook and our website, and to our newsletter audience!...your input and participation helps celebrate and evangelize our local farms and artisan producers!  In Gratitude!...HAPPY 2012 TO ALL!

Most everyone was "tuned" in and tapping their feet..though there were several who showed us their dance moves...like market regulars Marlene & Gerard below.

TOUR DE FARM:

PUDWILL BERRY FARMS

a little history...

Owned and operated by Randy Pudwill and wife PY,

Pudwill's father began Pudwill
Berry Farms by growing raspberries in the early 80's.
Decades later,  the 59-acre farm in Nipomo grows a variety of fruits, from Hautbois strawberries to Black Mission figs.
Raspberry and blackberry bushes flourish in the temperate coastal community of Nipomo, and protective tenting keeps the Pudwill Farms booth at the farmers market deep in luscious berries througout the fall and winter months...lucky for us Californians!

My kids and I took a little road trip up the coast to visit friends in Paso Robles, and had the opportunity to visit nearby Pudwill Farms...What a delight! The weather was idyllic, the farm...gorgeous, impeccably maintained, spectacular views and the most fragrant smelling air!

RECIPES FOR SUCCESS

by Raquel Pena

After indulging over the holidays...recipes calling for vitamin and antioxidant rich greens and berries, and "good" fat/protein rich nuts and oils are detoxifying in nature and a great way to kick start the New Year!  The added benefit...so easy and so delicious!!

Green Goddess Detox Soup w/ Zucchini,Chard & Cilantro

Eat Your Greens! Puree your farmers' market findings into the one, the only, Green Soup! People love this soup, no matter how gross you think it looks or sounds. And if you can down at least a bowl, we promise you'll feel vibrant, energetic, and totally detoxed. And you'll be craving another.

Weekend Glow Kale Salad

Why eat kale?  Here's why:

  1. Kale has the greatest antioxidant activity when rated against 19 other vegetables!
  2. Kale is rich in lutein, which is a phytochemical that helps protect the eyes.
  3. Kale is one of the best sources of flavonols.
  4. Kale is a great source of calcium.

  Berries with Quark

Berries are best as is...or prepared very simply.  Here, Pudwill Farms berries with Spring Hill Dairy's quark (yes, we have quark at the market now!)...with a drizzle of honey and a sprig of green...beautiful, delicious and healthy!!

Need we say more??...other than yum!
