Watch Archis Acres on Youtube

Archis Acres, a greenhouse farm located in Valley Center, is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Karen and Colin Archipley, who use "bio hydroponics" to grow the most immaculate herbs, vegetables and fruits.

"The process uses organic nutrients and filtered water contained and recirculated into specially built growing tables, all without the use of soil. The technique uses 90 percent less water than conventional farming, and because plants are often grown inside a greenhouse, the growth is controlled and protected from the environment."

But the Archipleys' good works don't stop there...Archis Acres also operates a therapeutic 90-day training program for military veterans, designed to help them transition back into civilian life...by providing them with training in sustainable agriculture, greenhouse construction, as well as resume writing and interview techniques.

Archis Acres has definitely been a labor of love for the Archipleys...and tasting their living basil, hydroponic kale, chard, lettuces, avocados and more...is testimony!

FACES OF THE MARKET:

by Andrea Drexelius of French Basketeer

Back in Force

You are not alone if you have missed Sage Mountain at the market the last few months.  The Farm suffered during the frosty weather we had late last fall, but now they are not only back at the market, they are back with amazing goodness, as only Sage can provide, including last week, Broccoli Rabe....

The best beets, with perfect leafy "greens"~

When you are in the booth, be sure to ask Paloma what else she has that is not on the table....this includes amazing Spicy Mix lettuces and baby spinach she keeps cool and covered, as well as their CSA Beef program.

Look for olives and olive oil (pressed by Sage) at the market soon.  Everything that farmer/owner Phil Noble from Sage produces is spectacular and often unusual.  Even the humble red and green onion are a picture of perfection~

Mental  Calisthenics

meditative chess

Most people know about physical calisthenics.  They have been defined as "a form of dynamic exercise consisting of a variety of simple, often rhythmical, movements, generally using minimal equipment or apparatus. They are intended to increase body strength and flexibility with movements such as bending, jumping, swinging, twisting or kicking, using only one's body weight for resistance. They are usually conducted in concert with stretches.  Calisthenics when performed vigorously and with variety can benefit both muscular and cardiovascular fitness."  Mental calisthenics are essentially the same but they are for the mind instead of the body. Physical calisthenics lead to physical fitness whereas mental calisthenics lead to mental fitness. Continue reading
