Cochran Appointed to ICC Committee
Fulton Cochran

Fulton Cochran has been appointed by ICC for a two-year term as chair of the Governing Committee of the Fire Services Membership Council (FSMC).

The FSMC has replaced the Fire Code Council that Fulton was first appointed to in 2008.  The FSMC is the grass-roots link between the fire service nationally and the ICC.

As Chair of the FSMC, Cochran is also an automatic member of the new ICC Codes and Standards Council, which is the group empowered by ICC to make appointments for all code development committees.

July 14 Chapter Meeting

SN-ICC's July 14 luncheon meeting will feature a half-hour overview of the Southern Nevada Consensus Amendments to the 2009 International Fire Code, presented by Stephen DiGiovanni, P.E., from the Clark County Fire Department.  This presentation will be tailored to amendments that individuals primarily involved in building codes will be interested in.

At the chapter's June luncheon, Randy Hunter with Cooper Bussmann and Howard Herndon with Southwest Electric Services provided a one-hour overview on Selective Coordination of Emergency Systems. The presentation covered what these systems are, why they're important, applicable code requirements, where they should be applied and how they are enforced. Their presentation was well received by attendees, who received CEUs for the one-hour presentation. SN-ICC is scheduling a more detailed presentation on this subject for the fall.

SN-ICC meetings start at 11:30 a.m. and generally end at 1 p.m.  Meetings are held at Sierra Gold, 6515 S. Jones Blvd. (215 & Jones), on the second floor.

Lunch is free for SN-ICC members and $20 for non-members.  Click here to become a member.

Upcoming Meeting Information:

  • August 11:  Our guest speaker will be Tim Schneider, president and founder of Soaring Eagle Enterprises, Inc. Schneider will provide a presentation on ethics and integrity.  The primary focus is to develop and use skills to identify ethical dilemmas, provide guidance to the correct and ethical course of action and to develop a heightened sense of ethical values.  Mr. Schneider is the author of Providing Superior Customer Service and Follow Me, I am the Leader and a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the College of Southern Nevada.

SN-ICC Director-at-Large

As part of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council's mission to promote education, the chapter gave four $3,000 scholarships to deserving students.

SN-ICC's scholarship was advertised through the Nevada Public Education Foundation.  The chapter received over 40 applications, which were narrowed down to the four grantees.

The culmination of the process to select scholarship recipients took place at the NPEF's award presentation lunch in May.

SN-ICC President Neil Burning and 2nd Vice-President Valarie Loper were on stage to greet and award SN-ICC scholarships to Lane Williams, Jonathan Ruvalcaba, Carlos Santos and Alexy Serrano, who plan to study architecture, engineering and building administration.

Join us at our July monthly luncheon to meet these fine students, who will also be honorary SN-ICC student members for the remainder of the year.

SN-ICC Hosts Code Amendment Update Classes
Fire Code Training
David Klein (right background) discusses updates to the Southern Nevada IFC amendments.
By Doug Evans

SN-ICC 1st Vice-President

During the month of June, SN-ICC hosted presentations on the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2009 IBC and IFC. We were pleased to be able to provide these trainings at no charge to attendees.

James Gerren, Clark County Building Division, and Stephen Cullen, Henderson Department of Building & Fire Safety, gave an overview of amendments to the 2009 IBC on June 14. As chairs of the General and Fire-Life Safety Committees (respectively), these individuals were able to provide an understanding of the reasons behind these respective amendments.

On June 28, two sessions, each a half day in length, highlighted the consensus amendments to the 2009 IFC that are expected to have the most impact on the local community. In addition to the consensus amendments, each jurisdiction (Clark County, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson) also discussed specific amendments to their respective fire codes. The speakers were Steve DiGiovanni from Clark County, Fulton Cochran from Henderson and David Klein from Las Vegas.

These Southern Nevada Amendment update classes were well attended. CEUs were provided to attendees for both of the preceding educational sessions.

On July 27, our next amendment update class will provide a 2-hour overview of the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2009 IECC. For more information click here to download a PDF flier.
