A message from the Chairman...

Ken Koehler  County Board Chairman

Dear McHenry County Resident:

The McHenry County Board is pleased to announce that it has appointed Ms. Leslie Schermerhorn to fill the position of Regional Superintendent of Schools.

A native of McHenry County, Ms. Schermerhorn is a graduate of Marian Central Catholic High School and is a resident of Bull Valley. Ms. Schermerhorn is the current assistant principal at LaSalle Language Academy in Chicago and has 13 years experience working in the educational system. Ms. Schermerhorn will be responsible for overseeing the McHenry County Regional Office of Education (ROE), which performs duties such as renewing teaching certificates, inspecting schools before they open and auditing school districts.

The appointment of Ms. Schermerhorn ends a nearly year-long search to fill the position in which McHenry County owes a special thank you to the Lake County Regional Office of Education and their Regional Superintendent of Schools Roycealee Wood. The Lake County ROE has graciously been assisting the county in fulfilling the state-mandated duties throughout the search process.

I know all McHenry County residents will want to join me in wishing Ms. Schermerhorn the best of luck in her new position. Ms. Schermerhorn will begin her new role as the Regional Superintendent on May 1, 2012.

Sincerely,

Kenneth D. Koehler

County Board Chairman

If you lose power to your home you should always call ComEd at 1-800-EDISON1 (1-800-334-7661) to report the outage.  Reporting your outage ensures that ComEd has the most up to date information for restoring power to your area.

Generators and Generator Safety

Do you and your family have a plan for power outages?  Have you thought about what you will do if you lose power for three days?  How about for a week?  Have you considered purchasing a portable generator to be able to provide for your family's basic needs?  When the power is out a portable generator would allow you to operate a few lights in the dark, run fans to stay comfortable, and keep your essential appliances working so food doesn't spoil...Read More.

McHenry County Sheriff's Office Update

National Telecommunicators Week

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office recently celebrated National Telecommunicators Week - April 8-14. Currently, the Sheriff's Office has 17 full-time Telecommunicators. The public knows them best by those who answer a 911 call in the McHenry County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Communication Center.

The MCSO Communication Center is staffed 24/7 and dispatches for the Sheriff's Office, eight outside police agencies, and four fire departments, along with answering any emergency and non-emergency calls to the Sheriff's Office.

The MCSO Communication Center staff takes care of our communities' public safety officers by passing along important information from a caller, ensuring officers have the resources they need during a traffic stop, and will stay on the line with a caller and provide them with CPR instructions until paramedics arrive. During the February 2, 2011 blizzard, the MCSO Communication Center staff worked long hours supporting emergency personnel who were assisting others. We owe these individuals a special thank you for all that they do!

Treasurer's Office Energy Star Dedication

On Wednesday, April 18, the County held a dedication for the Treasurer's Office building in recognition of obtaining an Energy Star label designation. Energy Star is a voluntary government and industry partnership that makes it easy for businesses and consumers to save money and protect the environment. The Treasurer's Office building is the first McHenry County building to achieve an Energy Star rating, achieving a rating of 84 out of 100. To achieve an Energy Star rating, a building must attain a score of 75, ranking it among the top quartile of all similar buildings in energy use...Read More.

Medication Take-Back Initiative

The McHenry County Department of Health encourages residents to take advantage of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's program "National Take-Back Initiative" on Saturday, April 28.  The one-day event is from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., at participating law enforcement sites. According to the Partnership for a Drug Free America, approximately 2,500 teens each day use prescription drugs to get high for the first time. Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

Residents can bring prescription and over-the-counter, solid dose (tablets, capsules) medications in clear, sealed plastic bags for disposal.  Items not accepted include liquids, intravenous (IV) bags/solutions, injectables, needles, lancets and sharps. Prescription labels should be removed (or personal information blocked out with a permanent marker) from plastic bottles before tossing into weekly curbside recycling containers...Read More.

Special Courts Update:
May is National Drug Court and Mental Health Month

National Drug Court Month is a national celebration of Drug Courts, which are proven to be the nation's most effective strategy in reducing recidivism - especially among drug addicted offenders with long criminal histories. The Government Accountability Office recently released a report finding that Drug Courts save money and reduce substance abuse and crime. "GAO reports are objective, fact-based, nonpartisan, and held to the highest research standards," said Dr. Doug Marlowe, Chief of Science, Law and Policy with the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. "This report reinforces the scientific merit of Drug Court research, confirming that Drug Courts are a proven solution for reducing drug abuse and crime. We know beyond a reasonable doubt that at least 75 - 80% of Drug Courts achieve reliable and significant reductions in crime. This translates into large cost-savings for taxpayers averaging more than $6,000 per participant."

Shifting gears, the Mental Health Court will celebrate its fifth year of operation this April. Since the program's inception in April of 2007, the graduation total is at 35 individuals. We are looking forward to another graduation ceremony in July, 2012.

In participation of National Drug Court and Mental Health Month, both programs will have staff and participants volunteering in conjunction with the Land Conservancy of McHenry County in order to help restore and maintain Ryder's Woods in Woodstock. This provides each participant with a wonderful opportunity to engage in a positive activity which "gives back" to our community.
