MCDOT Winter Operations

With the arrival of the snow, the McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT) has been preparing for the 2010 -2011 winter season. The following are helpful tips on MCDOT's winter snow operation for residents and drivers on our County road system.

The MCDOT maintains about 530 lane miles of highway throughout our County. Those roadways are divided into snow routes that average about 28 miles per route. In normal operations the Division dispatches 22 large snow plow trucks to the 19 routes. The DOT can also supplement the routes with several smaller trucks as well. The reason for additional equipment on the routes is the expansion of our roadway system from two lane highways to multiple lane roadways mainly in the southeastern portion of our County. A map of the DOT snow routes can be found on this website. In extreme events the MCDOT moves to a 24 hour operation which reduces the routes to 12 but offers 24 hour coverage...read more

The holidays are a joyful time of year, filled with parties and other celebratory events. They are a time to be thankful for what we have and to catch up with family and friends. But the focus on food and eating during this season can be very tough, especially for families dealing with diabetes.  Remember that holiday meals and traditions don't have to disrupt your diabetes control. With a little preparation, you'll be ready to face any holiday head-on and still enjoy it.

Animal Control & Adoption Center

The cold weather months are hard on everyone including our pets.  Winter's dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren't the only discomforts pets can suffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents are licked off of bare paws. When taking your pet for a walk, keep them on a leash.  More animals are lost during the winter than any other season.
