McHenry County DOT Balances Winter Operations and Groundwater Protection
Sustainability in winter operations and protection of groundwater has become a big concern in McHenry County. Improper handling or application of salt can contribute to this problem. The McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT) is considered a leading agency in the area of proper salt use, storage and in the use of alternative chemicals and liquids. MCDOT has won several local and national awards for these innovations and best practices, including several individual awards for education and leadership. At an American Public Works Association event recently held in Schaumburg, Maintenance Worker Scott Dunker placed third in a skills competition. Mr. Dunker is responsible for the loading of salt onto the plows throughout the winter season and for the handling of the salt during delivery and clean up of the parking lots throughout the season at the MCDOT facility.
Proper handling and loading of the salt is vital to ensure spillage and runoff is avoided/minimized. The MCDOT is proud to have a skilled operator like Mr. Dunker as part of their team and proud of his achievement. |
