Dear Friend of Josiah Hill Clinic,
Well folks, the numbers are in. This year, JHC held 42 blood lead screening clinics, hosted 12 healthy home workshops, and trained 80 volunteers, interns, and public health promoters to create safer homes for children in the Portland community. Thank you all for being part of such a productive year! Read on to find out more about our exciting plans for 2011.
 JHC Goes Glam!

Interns PresentThis month, JHC made a brief foray into the world of beauty and glamor. Our two Linfield College interns Hannah and Maribel presented about creating beauty products from everyday nontoxic materials, while Program Manager Amanda Lawrence gave a great Green Cleaning Workshop at the ICTC Holiday Beauty Spa.  Read our blog for details and pictures!  Also, Amanda is now officially a TV star. Watch her interview on MetroEast's Community Hotline, in which she shared a heart-warming fact with the world: JHC volunteers logged almost 2000 hours with us this year! How amazing is that!
...And a Happy New Year
MLK Check out all the fun plans we have  for January! We'll be at the Parkrose Highschool Fix-It Fair on the 22nd, which also provides free giveaways, workshops, and bike repair; we're hosting regular blood lead screening clinics every second Tuesday of the month at the International Center for Traditional Childbearing, as well as our usual clinics at the Baltazar-Ortiz Community Center every first Thursday; and, we'll be at the Keeping the Dream Alive event in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 17th! View our calendar for details.  Also, January is Radon Awareness month, so stay alert for news and resources from the newly formed radon coalition.
Staff Spotlight: Bruce Watts

Bruce WattsBruce M. Watts and Josiah Hill III became good friends during the twelve years in which Bruce was Executive Directorof the  Coalition of Black Men. In 2000, Bruce joined TriMet as the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise & Workforce Manager, bringing with him an extensive background in advocacy, broad-based community relations, problem solving, and negotiations. In 2002, Bruce was promoted to Senior Director of the new Diversity and Transit Equity department, striving to create a diverse contracting & construction workforce reflecting the Portland Metropolitan community. One of the founding members of JHC, the Clinic holds a special place in Bruce's heart.  As Bruce says, "This was Josiah's baby, and he was a great man. When Josiah passed, I made a commitment to devote time and energy to this project." Thank you, Bruce, for your unswerving dedication and support. We wouldn't be here without you.

Speaking of loyalty and commitment, Bruce is the Chair of this year's 5th Annual Leaving a Legacy Fundraiser! The details are still in the works, but it's shaping up to be a wonderful evening of friends, food, and festivities, including live music and silent auction items. We are accepting sponsors at this time: please see our online sponsorship information page or email Executive Director Charles McGee, II.  You can also view our Facebook Album of photos from last year's celebration.

Thank you all for all you do, and cheers to the happy and healthy New Year ahead!

Sincerely,
The Staff
