Dear Friend of Josiah Hill Clinic,
Hello all! Can you believe it's December already?  My, how time flies when you're promoting healthy homes and neighborhoods. For those of you new to the newsletter, welcome to our warm and wonderful JHC community. For our long-time supporters, thank you for continuing to be so warm and wonderful!
 Giving the Gift of Health

Lizzi Plays with Nontoxic Play Dough We at JHC have leaped right into the holiday spirit with a plethora of November workshops and blood lead screenings.  After all, what better gift to give than the gift of health? First off, we did a little outreach at the SE Uplift Nonprofit Community Fair, where we learned all about other small nonprofits seeking to improve the standard of living for Portlanders. We provided free blood lead screenings at the First Annual Community Fix It Fair, St. Ann's Church in SE Portland, the Mid County Health Clinic, and at the 15th Annual Trailblazers Harvest Dinner, and we also hosted a really fun multi-cultural Non-Toxic Cleaning workshop at the Baltazar-Ortiz Community Center- at one point, four different languages were being spoken in the room! Please, read our blog, Tales from Josiah Hill III Clinic, for synopses of the events, or check out our Facebook Album Page for pictures.

Staff Spotlight: Joice Taylor

Joice TaylorJoice Taylor is the newest addition to the JHC board.  Hailing from balmy San Diego, Joice holds a plethora of degrees and certificates; the most recent is a certificate in Urban Renewal and Economic Redevelopment from Portland State University and the Portland Development Commission. Over the years, she has held many positions fighting to increase the quality of life for city residents. She has worked with Planned Parenthood- Mar Monte Nevada, Groundwork Portland, and the Albina Community Development Corporation, among others, and is presently the Housing Consultant for Multnomah County's Healthy Homes Project and current Chair of the North/Northeast Business Association, focusing on small businesses and neighborhood sustainability. With her goal of "Creating a thriving and livable community," we look forward to Joice's expertise and enthusiasm in promoting the mission of the Clinic!
Radon Awareness
Radon

At the recent JHC Board of Directors retreat, concern was expressed  that some areas in Portland have exceptionally high levels of indoor radon, especially sites that lie on the Missoula Flood sediments in N. Portland. As radon is a major cause of lung cancer, JHC hosted a meeting attended by CAT, CEP, EPA, Groundwork Portland, Metro Multifamily Housing and Multnomah County Environmental Health. All participants strongly agreed that residents have the right to know about hazards in their environment. A Radon Awareness Committee will spearhead an awareness and outreach campaign to be launched this January, which will appeal to the DHS for free test kits to be distributed to at-risk families, and explore the possibility of providing assistance for remediation to those in need. Click here for more information on radon in your home.

Your dedicated staff at JHC have been and will continue to improve our abilities to carry on Josiah Hill III's dreams. Check out these quick tips we learned at the indoor air quality talk given by renowned air specialist Harriet Ammann. Lucky ED Charles McGee and PM Amanda Lawrence are flying to sunny San Diego for the EPA CARE Training, where they will learn about creating sustainability through local solutions, plus share a JHC slide show and do some outreach to the national healthy home community.

Don't forget to check our website for the latest exciting updates, events, and blood lead screening clinics from JHC, and be sure to snuggle in this holiday season and stay warm, safe, and dry!

Sincerely,
The Staff
