At the recent JHC Board of Directors retreat, concern was expressed  that some areas in Portland have exceptionally high levels of indoor radon, especially sites that lie on the Missoula Flood sediments in N. Portland. As radon is a major cause of lung cancer, JHC hosted a meeting attended by CAT, CEP, EPA, Groundwork Portland, Metro Multifamily Housing and Multnomah County Environmental Health. All participants strongly agreed that residents have the right to know about hazards in their environment. A Radon Awareness Committee will spearhead an awareness and outreach campaign to be launched this January, which will appeal to the DHS for free test kits to be distributed to at-risk families, and explore the possibility of providing assistance for remediation to those in need.
