Dear Friend of Josiah Hill Clinic,
You would think that in the fall the action would slow down, but here at the Josiah Hill III Clinic, things are really picking up!  Read on to learn about all the events, awards, articles, and wonderful people JHC has been involved with over the past month, as well as our exciting new plans for the future.
Out and About: To Portland, and Beyond!

Amanda explains how to make nontoxic cleanersPer usual, JHC has been bopping around Portland all month long. We hosted two green cleaning workshops, one in collaboration with IRCO's Africa House, and one in Arbor Glen with the assistance of the East Portland Centennial Community Association and Human Solutions.  We recruited some fresh new volunteers at the Reed College Nonprofit Expo; it was great to see people discover our organization for the first time and get excited about all we do. We also participated in the Head Start Health Fair at St. Luke's Lutheran Church- a particular thank you to board member Martha Carter-Balske for helping us with outreach- and we conducted blood lead screenings at the African American Wellness Village at the Blazers Boys & Girls Club.  Last but not least, Program Manager Amanda Lawrence and Communications Specialist Nicole Staudinger had the honor of attending the EPA Region 10 Environmental Justice Conference in Sea Tac, Washington, to give input on the newly forming Environmental Justice Strategic Plan. Why don't you visit our fun new blog for more details on these events?

Staff Spotlight: Mark Lewis

Treasurer Mark LewisMark D. Lewis is the Josiah Hill III Clinic's extremely valued treasurer.  Four years ago, JHC founding board member Bruce Watts spotted Mark at a Say Hey NW meeting, recognized him as a great match with the work and mission of the Clinic, and invited him to join the board.   A man of many accomplishments, Mark received his MBA and a Certificate in Leadership Development from John Hopkins University. He holds a degree in Accounting from Hampton University as well.  Mark is currently the Medical Billing Manager at Multnomah County Health Department, but participates in a myriad of projects in the Portland community, such as serving as Co-Chair for the Steve Baker Colorectal Cancer Alliance.  A huge thanks to Mark for taking the time to carry on the work of Josiah Hill III.
Big News and Big Plans: JHC Keeps On Keepin' On!
Baby Ezra at the Baltazar-Ortiz CenterThis November, the Clinic has so many fingers to prick, we don't know where to begin! We are offering free blood lead testing at the Ron Russell Middle School Community Fix-It fair, hosting a special blood lead testing clinic for the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization, as well as holding our regularly scheduled clinic at the Baltazar-Ortiz Community Center.  Also in the news: This Saturday we will attend the SE Uplift Community Resource Fair to share our mission and network with numerous other Portland area nonprofits.  The event is open to the public, so please feel free to stop by.  Plus, plans are already in the works for sponsoring the Northwest Environmental Health Conference and for the Josiah Hill III Clinic Appreciation Event, both scheduled for February! Remember, you can always stay up-to-date with JHC happenings by checking our News page on the website and by visiting our calendar.

JHC is growing by leaps and bounds.  We have extended our Healthy Home Check-Up Program until the end of December, so if you or a family you know have concerns about environmental hazards in the home, there is still time to sign up. We are thrilled to welcome back Joice Taylor to the board of directors; Joice has done some great work with us in the past, so it promises to be a superb future. You should probably check out our fancy new profile, too: we are now listed in the Portland Redirect Guide   Also, amazingly, the Clinic currently has 117 friends on Facebook and a whopping 671 followers on Twitter! Now, can you believe it, there's more... drum roll please... JHC was named Metro Parent Magazine's Nonprofit Angel of the Month for October. Click here to read our article on page 36.

We are so pleased with all of this positive development, and extend a special thank you to you, our readers, for being such a supportive and giving community.

Sincerely,
The Staff
