Dear Friend of Josiah Hill Clinic,
Well yes indeed, it is everyone's favorite time again- time for your monthly ray of Josiah Hill III Clinic sunshine! We've been as busy as ever, testing migrant children in Hillsboro, chatting with board member Martha Carter-Balske, and digging up helpful resources to improve the lives of our faithful supporters.  And somehow, we even found time to start a blog about it all!
Health Fairs, Workshops, and Field Trips! Oh My!

Ilene is so brave! What an action-packed September! Despite the cloudy weather, JHC tested kids at the Green Sprouts Organic Baby Festival in Peninsula Park and the Mexican Bicentennial Celebration in Pioneer Square, as well as providing a special blood lead screening for the PDX Green Parenting group. Program Coordinator Amanda Lawrence also hosted a very successful green-cleaning workshop for the NE Portland Vietnamese community through the Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization's Asia House, and we are planning to attend three (count'em, THREE!) health fairs already in October! Come visit us at the Latino Health Fair, the African Wellness Village, and the Head Start Health Fair.  Please consult our calendar for details.
JHC Spotlight: The Lovely Martha Carter-Balske
This month JHC would like to recognize board member Martha Carter-Balske for her dedication to the Clinic.  Martha was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in French Literature and Language from la Universidad Autónoma de México and a Diploma in Translation from el Colegio de México. She moved to the United States twenty-five years ago and she has been a court interpreter for twenty of those years. She is currently working with the Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon, helping attorneys and investigators communicate with their Spanish speaking clients. Martha and Josiah Hill III were married for thirteen years, and Martha played an integral role in establishing the Clinic to carry on Josiah's dream. A heartfelt thank you to Martha for everything she does.

Bill at the Leaving a Legacy Event...and we at the Clinic sure do care about you! Thus, we are taking this opportunity to share some helpful resources we've come across in our public health perusals.  Due to the newly emerging bedbug epidemic, we provide various resources on identification, management, and reported infestation locations on our News page. We also found a nifty new link through the Healthy Child Healthy World website where you can take a virtual tour of an "E-home" to learn how to make your own home hazard free.  For those of you concerned about your pesticide intake, this site from the Pesticide Action Network identifies pesticides found on products from almonds to zucchini.  And last but not least, the American Lung Association of Oregon is generously providing home radon test kits for a mere $14.50.  Enjoy.

Drum roll please... the Josiah Hill III Clinic blog is now officially available for online viewing!  Our first post of is all about the field trip we took to Hillsboro to screen the blood lead levels of forty-five children of migrant workers in collaboration with the Oregon Child Development Coalition. We'll be updating frequently, and are always open to comments and guest bloggers, so please feel free to get in touch

Just as one last reminder: our Healthy Home Check-Up program ends October 31st, so be sure to contact Amanda to sign up for your last chance to get a free in-home assessment of environmental hazards in your abode. Take-aways include a hefty healthy home goody bag, multiple community resources, and an individualized action plan to ensure that your home is as comfortable, safe, and hazard-free as possible.

Here's wishing everyone a bountiful October!

Sincerely,
The Staff
