| Prepare for Worship |
Sunday, Dec. 18, Fourth Sunday of Advent
God keeps the promise made to David, to give him an everlasting throne. The angel tells Mary that God will give David's throne to her son, Jesus. She is perplexed by Gabriel's greeting and by the news of her coming pregnancy, but she is able still to say, "Count me in." We, who know that Jesus is called king only as he is executed, still find it a mystery hard to fathom, but with Mary today we hear the news of what God is up to and say, "Count us in." The readings are 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16, Luke 1:46b-55, Mary's "Magnificat," Romans 16:25-27 and Luke 1:26-38. The hymn of the day will be ELW 258, "Unexpected and Mysterious." Offering music will be "A Dove Flew Down from Heaven," by Johannes Brahms, sung by Cantorei at 8:45 a.m. and Cathedral Choir at 11 a.m.

WELCA - December Mission
| The ongoing outreach for the Women of the ELCA will be for the DMARC food pantry. As always, the congregation is invited to participate. As you may already know, the needs are growing much faster than the available food supply. Cash donations are appreciated because that allows them to buy needed food at a discounted cost (because they can buy in bulk quantities). We thank ALL who contributed Christmas items for the Women's Shelter this month!
Women of the ELCA will meet on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012. Sarah Group is meeting 9:30 am at Jean William's home at 314 42nd Street, Des Moines. Lois Group is having a Bible study so bring your women's magazine (Gather January/February 2012). Lois Group will meet in Neumann at 12:30. |

Christmas Healing Services
| If you are seeking a quiet time of worship with healing prayer & anointing prior to Christmas, please join us for our annual Christmas Healing Services on Wednesday, Dec. 21st, at 11 am or 7 pm in the Chapel.
Quiet carols, a short meditation, healing prayer and Holy Communion provide an island of peace in the midst of these often-hectic days of preparation. Friends and family members are most welcome. [The 11am service is followed by our Mid-Week Music offering, "Christmas at St. John's" at noon, with lunch available at 12:30pm.] |

| A Night at the Museum | Support our Youth Ministry Seeking "Big Ticket" Items for the 2012 Youth Auction
Do you have connections? Can you call in a favor? Do you need to make a charitable donation before the end of the year? If so, the youth of St. John's need YOU to call those favors in, use your connections, and donate what you can!
We are planning our 4th annual youth fundraising auction and dinner and need "big ticket" items to auction! Need some ideas? Are you an artist? Do you know someone who is an artist? Do you have a cabin on a lake? Do you like to cook or bake? Do you sew or do woodworking in your free time? Do you have a service you could offer? Do you have season tickets to events that you could share with us? The possibilities are endless! If you have an item or an idea, contact a member of the youth auction committee: Tammi Reyes, Heidi Slinker, Terri Speirs, Lora Simpson, and Megan Clausen (meganc@stjohnsdsm.org). And mark your calendars now: March 2, 2012. More surprises to come. Stay tuned! |
