Prepare for Worship
Worship
Sunday, Oct. 30, Reformation Sunday
On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ - the good news - that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism, we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians also will be one at the Lord's table.

The Reformation readings are Jeremiah 31:31-34, Psalm 46, Romans 3:19-28 and John 8:31-36. The hymns will be ELW 504, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," ELW 651, "Oh, Praise the Gracious Power," as the Hymn of Praise, ELW 513, "Listen, God is Calling," for the gospel procession, ELW 516, "Almighty God, Your Word is Cast," ELW 517, "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word" for the offertory and ELW 654, "The Church's One Foundation." At 8:45 a.m. Cantorei will sing, "Yet it Stood Strong," by Bradley Ellingboe, and at 11 a.m. Cathedral Choir will sing "Ein feste Burg is unser Gott," by Hans Leo Hassler, for offering. The congregation will sing ELW 591, "That Priceless Grace," at both services.
The rite of Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation will be celebrated at the 8:45 a.m. Reformation Sunday service. Congratulations to our confirmands!

WELCA - November Mission
WELCA

The November WELCA outreach project will be a collection for the Lutheran Services in Iowa Care program. LSI has a number of programs to assist families in Iowa, but we will focus on the needs for babies throughout the month of November. Suggestions are: diapers, baby wipes, shampoo, Similac formula, and cabinet door safety devices. As always, the boxes for your donations will be marked LSI and will be near the office reception and in the hallways outside Neumann Hall.

Your support is really appreciated!

The Fine Arts Series at St. John's commences its 2011-12 season on Saturday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. The Friends of the Arts at St. John's present a concert featuring J. S. Bach's monumental Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. Featured soloists on the concerto will be Sarah Garner as the harpsichord soloist, Julie Fox Henson, assistant concert-master of the Des Moines Symphony, on violin and Sandra Wacha, Des Moines Symphony principal, on flute. The St. John's Chamber Orchestra will perform as the accompanying orchestra. The concert will close with Bach's ever beloved and congregational-favorite Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.
Senior Health Insurance Information Program
Shiip Logo
SHIIP is a federally-funded program operated in Iowa through the Department of Insurance. The program's mission is to provide trained volunteer counselors to assist seniors, disabled persons on Medicare, and those about to turn 65 navigate through the complex world of Medicare. Counselors assist, on a no-fee basis, those about to enroll in Medicare, helping them select Medigap plans, choosing between regular Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, as well as aiding them in selecting and enrolling in a prescription drug plan (Medicare Part D). Four downtown Des Moines congregations are members of The Bridge, which is a sponsor organization for SHIIP. If you are a member of one of these congregations and would like assistance, you can call SHIIP directly at 800-351-4664 or call the receptionist at St. John's Lutheran Church at 515-243-7691. A volunteer counselor will then contact you to help make appropriate Medicare decisions.

Highchairs Needed
We are in need of a few more high chairs in Weertz. We are blessed to have more children at our Beloved Community meals and need seating. If you have outgrown the need for one in your family, or know of someone with a spare, we welcome the donation. What a wonderful need for our congregation!

ASAP Updates
ASAP Logo
ASAP Named "Most Original"
ASAP, the After School Arts Program, is now an award-winning organization! ASAP was named "Most Original" walking entry in the 2011 Iowa State Fair Parade, which took place August 10. The event featured more than 170 entries and nearly a half-million viewers. ASAP's entry included students and staff, parents, volunteers, and partners from Evelyn K. Davis Park, home of ASAP Summer Arts Camp. They proudly showed off a half-dozen original paintings and "flew" the giant Davis Eagle mascot created by students at Summer Arts Camp in June. A Parks and Rec van followed the group, covered in colorful ASAP banners.

ASAP Renews Call for Volunteers
The Fall 2011 session of ASAP started October 20, with 50 students enrolled and another 12 on a waiting list. Several volunteers have had to pull out at the last minute, so ASAP could use a few more helping hands this session. Can you help on Thursdays (even one or two days between now and December 8), 3:30 to 5:30? If so, please contact Michelle Bolton King: 515-770-3380 or michelle@asap-dsm.org. Thank you!
Peace,
