  • Combined 8:45 and 11:00 am services at 10:30 am at Jester Park Lodge.  For the 5:00 pm service on Saturday and the 7:45 service on Sunday, stewardship packets are available in the Fireside Lounge. For those attending at Jester Park Lodge, the packets will be available there as well.  Please pick up your Stewardship packet before you leave.

Sunday, October 2, at Jester Park Lodge  St. John's will have our usual 5:00 pm Saturday evening and 7:45 am Sunday worship service at St. John's. The 8:45 and 11:00 services will be combined into one and held at Jester Park Lodge (maps available in the lounge and on our website). Sunday School will begin at 9:30 am at Jester Park Lodge; the worship service begins at 10:30 am and the noon meal will begin around 11:45 (food provided, a free will offering will help offset the cost of the meal).  Entertainment will be Asphalt and Stained Glass. This is such an inspiring service and atmosphere, you won't want to miss it!

► WIRED Yoga's fall session runs Thursday evenings through October 27. It will be held at 5:45 for an hour in the Fireside Lounge. It is designed for both new and experienced yoga participants. ► WIRED Wii Fitness: Delaine Marker would like feedback on whether there is interest in setting up a Wii Fitness class at church. If there is interest, Delaine will contact the group.

►  BOOK DISCUSSION: We are starting a discussion on the book, Open the Door, by Joyce Rupp-the book she will be talking about at the WIRED luncheon and retreat on Oct. 23rd. We will have 3 discussions prior to the retreat: Monday evenings, Oct. 3, 10, and 17 and three discussions after the retreat: Monday evenings, November 7, 14, and 21. Discussions will be held in Neumann starting at 6:00 pm for about 1½ hours. You may bring your meal in a bag or can bring food to share. All are welcome whether a part of WIRED or not. ► EAGLES will meet on Oct. 14 at 5:30 pm at Chef's Kitchen on Beaver and Hickman for diner, then on to the Drake Municipal Observatory for a lecture and viewing if weather permits.

 ASAP Seeks Volunteers for Fall Session
ASAP LogoASAP, the After School Arts Program, had an abundant, active summer and is now gearing up for our fall session. We are recruiting volunteers to assist teaching artists, work with students, help with snacks, ride the bus, recruit more volunteers, and more. The fall program takes place Thursdays, October 20­ - December 8, 3:30­ - 5:30 at St. Johnıs. Orientation for new staff is Thursday, October 13, 4:00 - ­5:30. Fall studios include Culinary Arts, Ceramics, Drawing Comics, Poets Unleashed, and a Stomp-style Bucket Beats percussion class. Invitation to Discuss Worship

The Worship ministry team continually discerns what Lutheran worship is and could be at St. John's. As part of our ongoing discussion this fall, we will be reading together Mark Pierson's book The Art of Curating Worship, and would like to invite the congregation to join us! Everyone is welcome. We will read the book in installments and discuss the assigned section at the beginning of each Worship ministry team monthly meeting, the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 at St. John's. Our first assignment, pp. ix to 27, will be discussed at the Oct. 4 meeting. If you care to join us, obtain a copy of the book before that date and come prepared to share your thoughts. Driver Wanted/Needed for a St. John's Member
Ride
Amanda Kuhlman is attending classes at Upper Iowa University (50th & Westown Pkwy, WDM). The second term starts in late October and continues for 8 weeks. She needs a ride home from classes at 10:15 pm on Tuesday nights. If you can help, please contact her at 515-244-2051 or stop by the nursery on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings. Thank you!

 

Luther Park Fall Soup Luncheon & Bake Sale

This annual event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Luther Park Apartments & Community Center (1555 Hull Ave. DSM). A free-will offering will be accepted for a variety of soups, as well as homemade breads, cookies and bars. All proceeds go toward the purchase of new communication equipment for The Gardens of Luther Park. The Southwest Polk County Chapter #31170 of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will provide supplemental funds for this event. Please join us!
Third Hope for the Hungry Conference . . .
Hope for the Hungry Will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church (1548 8th Street, DSM). Doors open at 8:00 a.m., and the conference runs from 8:30 to 4:00. The "go-forth" goal and challenge to those who attend is End childhood hunger in the Greater Des Moines area by 2015. Speakers include: Elisabeth Ballstadt, Food Pantry Network Director; Jason Grimm, Food System Planner with the Iowa Valley RC&D; Sarai Rice, Executive Director of DMARC; and St. John's own Diana Sickles, leader of the Coalition in Support of Hungry Children. Workshop leaders are local and regional experts in growing, procuring, distributing and preparing food for the hungry. Registrants may choose one morning and one afternoon workshop to learn how we can all take part in building a strong local and sustainable food system for everyone, especially for hungry children and their families. Workshop titles are How to Garden; Urban Farms Beyond Yards; Starting a School Garden; Starting a Faith Garden; Preparing Nutritious Meals; Joining Food Rescue Programs; Raising Urban Chickens; Starting Farm to School Programs; Food Policy and Action -- Iowans Making a Difference; and Preserving Foods. The conference is hosted by DMARC Food Pantry Network and Healthy Urban Food and Farming (HUFF). The Social Ministry Team will meet Thursday, October 6th, at 6 pm at Pr. Mithelman's home. We have received notice that West Des Moines Christian Church is no longer hosting families at their facility. We will be discussing an opportunity to support another congregation in the future. Anyone who has been involved with the IHN is encouraged to attend this meeting as we determine our next steps with this vital ministry program. Contact Jennifer Early or Pr. Mithelman with questions.
