    ► Sunday School registrations for kids age three-Sixth Grade are now available on the kiosk near the east entrance of the sanctuary and on the St. John's website. Contact Sheryl Reed with any questions.

    ►  Rally Sunday will be Sunday, Septemter 11, from 10:00-11:00. The theme will be "God Gives, We Share."

    Wired

    WIRED Retreat and luncheon, Sunday, October 23, 12:30 - 4:00. The Joyce Rupp luncheon and retreat is now open to the community. With limited space, please get your reservation in if you are interested in attending. Joyce Rupp, author of Open the Door, offers inspiration and encouragement for personal growth. Please e-mail Darla at darlastiles@stjohnsdsm.org or sign up on our website, www.stjohnsdsm.org. Cost is $30 for lunch and the retreat.     WIRED Yoga will begin a new fall session starting Thursday, September 15 through Thursday, October 27. It will be held Thursdays at 5:45 for an hour in the Fireside Lounge at church. It is designed for both new and experienced yoga participants.     Recreational Book Club will meet Wednesday, August 31, at 4:30 pm at Caribou Coffee on Ingersoll to select this year's books. Everyone is welcome. Bring books or titles of books you would like to read. If unable to attend but would like to join the book club, e-mail or phone suggestions to Carol MacDonald at macpac00@mchsi.com, (515) 225-2656.

    The Couples/Singles Group will enjoy the fall weather on the Des Moines River - The cruise is Saturday, September 24 . The boat will depart at 6:00 pm for a 90-minute dinner cruise. (Meet at the dock on the river across from the Botanical Center.) It is $25 per person (payable at the time you make reservations with the Gregersens) plus a cash bar. The Couples/Singles Group is sponsoring this event but it is open to ALL people (singles, couples, young and old). We need a crowd but the maximum is 70 people. (Kids can come, but there is no discounted price.) Also the Des Moines Regatta is on the river that afternoon so come at 5:00 to watch the finals.  RSVP by September 18th at the latest to Kris or Kathy Gregersen, kkgregersen@gmail.com.

    Calling All Gardners 
    Did you plant more vegetables than you can use? Donate them to DMARC! Fresh produce is accepted at the DMARC central warehouse, 3816 36th Street,  Des Moines, Monday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on Friday. DMARC appreciates fruits and vegetables that are donated far before prime ripeness.  They must first distribute them to their 12 food pantries before they are given to hungry families and their children.  And yes, these donations are tax deductible as allowed. Thank you!

     

    Lutheran World Relief ~ School Kit Supplies

    Backpack Each kit needs: 

    •  4 - 70 sheet notebooks or college-ruled paper (approximately 8x10.5; no loose leaf)
    •  1 - 30-centimeter ruler, or ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
    •  1 - Pencil sharpener
    •  1 - Blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
    •  5 - Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with rubber band
    •  5 - Ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with rubber band
    •  1 - Box of 16 or 24 crayons
    •  1 - 21/2 inch eraser
    •  1 - Sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag, approx. 14"x17" with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks);  
    • Recommended fabrics include heavy cotton, canvas, denim, and twill.

    August Supply Schedule

    Suggested dates noted below, but will accept items through August 28.

    • August 7:    70 sheet notebooks AND 30-centimeter rulers (or rulers with inches & centimeters on opposite sides.
    • August 14:  Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers AND pencil sharpeners.
    • August 21:  Blunt scissors (safety scissors work best) AND 2.5 inch erasers.
    • August 28:  Ball point pens (no gel pens) AND crayons (boxes of 16 or 24).

    The kits will be assembled in September...

    Free Food For Seniors
    Fresh VegetablesThe Iowa Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits low-income older Iowans. This program provides the qualified user with coupons, which can be redeemed at participating farmers markets throughout Iowa for fresh fruits and vegetables. Applications for the coupons are available through our Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) throughout Iowa. The coupons are good from June 1 through Oct. 31. Eligible seniors must be sixty years of age or older with a household income level at or below $20,147 if single or $27,214 for a married couple. For more information call: 515/255-1310.
