►  Open the Door - A WIRED Event - This retreat, based on Joyce Rupp's latest book and led by the author, offers inspiration and encouragement for personal growth. Our heart-door opens inward to the deepest, truest part of who we are. There we find the inherent goodness seeded in us at our birth. The door then opens outward to the world where we bring this giftedness and share it with others. The retreat will include a conference, guided meditation, small group dialogue, and creative prayer experience.  The Joyce Rupp retreat will be limited in the number of participants.  Since Joyce is a nationally known author and speaker, people have read about this retreat on Joyce's website and have requested to attend. The retreat is open to the women of St. John's and their friends first, from this Sunday, June 26, through July  31.  On August 1, it will be open to the community.  Please sign up in the fireside lounge as soon as possible.  Cost is $30 for lunch and the retreat, due at the time you signup or you may send your check made out to St. John's Lutheran Church (with Joyce Rupp WIRED Retreat in the memo line) to:  St. John's Lutheran Church, Attention Darla Stiles, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309.

Driving Assistance

Ride

We have had several instances when members of St. John's needed driving assistance for medical reasons - restriction to drive after surgery or a procedure, the need to get home from the hospital or to an appointment. We would like to have some volunteers who are able to assist in those times on an "as needed basis." Sometimes notice is short, other times we know in advance. It doesn't happen oftern, but the need is real. If you are willing and able, please contact Katie at 243-7691.

After School Arts Program

ASAP LogoASAP annual Summer Arts Camp is this week, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., and we need as much hands-on help as we can get! The camp's theme this year is EAGLES, with each studio making work related to eagles. Please consider devoting a few hours of your summer to Mid City kids. The park has ample free parking and most activities take place out of the sun. Email or call Michelle Bolton King to volunteer: michelle@asap-dsm.org, mboltonking@mchsi.com, or 770-3380.

►  An ASAP benefit concert will be held Sunday, July 17th at the Ritual Café (downtown on 13th Street between Grand & Locust) beginning at 5:30 p.m. ASAP, the After School Arts Program, is a multi-disciplinary arts enrichment program for 3rd-5th graders in the Mid-City area of Des Moines. Since 2007, ASAP has connected more than 700 students with teaching artists in studios ranging from painting, ceramics, and photography to poetry, playwriting, drumming, dance, handbell choir, and much more. ASAP is making a positive difference in Mid-City kids' lives and, by extension, in the community, but we need help to keep the program running. The cost per child per 7-week session is $180 and each child is subsidized for over 97% of the cost. ASAP makes up the difference through grants and donations. Please join us on the 17th, learn more about ASAP and enjoy local talent: Mary McAdams; Asphalt & Stained Glass; Brian Joens; and Java Jews. Ritual Café offers coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine. If you cannot join us that evening, please make a donation online at www.asas-dsm.org.
